High school Football on the radio

Featured Replies

Does anyone else listen to the pregame stuff and post game interviews on 1530 on Friday nights it is pretty good.

D93 in Bowling Green does a good job for Bowling Green games.  They also provide a Facebook Live stream as well so kinda the best of both worlds and you can pick which one suits where you are.  If you're driving on the way to the game - listen to the radio.  But if you can't make the game maybe you watch the facebook live feed.  I enjoy listening to the radio version of it though.

I feel like the aspect of the game is going to the wayside due to local radio stations being bought up or just shutting down. Where I live the "BIG" games are on the radio, but the smaller communities don't have any sort of media presence. It's really sad because when I was younger you could listen to most every game from local ones to if the wind caught just right you could get some from central Kentucky. Streams are great and everything, I just miss the local color commentary.

Belfry's radio crew is top notch and they take a lot of pride in their radio broadcasts. East Kentucky Broadcasting/Mountain Top media definitely keep the radio broadcast game alive.. Pikeville also does a good job with their games as well.

Belfry is on 96.5 WXCC for all home and away games. Used to be CoalCounty96.5 now I think it is called The Mullet or something like that. They usually have a brief pre-game show and they usually stay 10-15 minutes later doing a wrap up with final stats and thoughts as well. Bobby Norman is the play by play guy, Steve Mickey does color, and Nee Jackson does stats and adds a little color as well. Mickey is a figurehead in the Belfry program and was a longtime D-Coordinator and Haywood's right hand man... he also basically reinvented Belfry's feeder system.

Norman is very good at play by play, Mickey brings tremendous football insight you rarely hear in a radio booth, and Jackson updates every scoring drive and gives stats at the Half in addition to final stats. You will get a Belfry centric/slanted broadcast but the guys go out of their way to avoid being blind homers. One thing Norman does that is a dying breed is he goes out of his way to update, score, time, and field position as often as he can.

On the flip side, more and more schools are streaming games on YouTube or Facebook in conjunction with their radio broadcast (or the radio broadcasters have moved over completely to video). This is done with various degrees of quality and success, but if you have the links, there are any number of games you watch on Friday night.

I did a full season as play-by-play a few years back and have filled in several times since. Jon Logan Smith, longtime radio announcer at Lincoln County, once told me that you can never tell the score and time enough. I took that to heart and mentioned it before each play; it became second nature.

Campbellsville is on 106.7 The Rock every Friday night... Blake Milby, Weston Jones, and Tyler Hardy do an Outstanding job of calling the game... They do a pre-game show and post-game show. By the way, that's also the Eagles Head Baseball coach, Central Office admin, and High School principal, in that order... All three are also former members of the High School football coaching staff...

Some games of interest can be found on NFHS, but they are usually awful.  No commentary, poor camera vantage, and rarely is the scoreboard shown leaving you clueless.  NFHS definitely last resort.

WCLU in Glasgow has been doing their games since the 80s. Jim Moody was play by play for a long time and he was great they’ve had Joe Myers who I went to school with since around 2002 and he does an excellent job as well. A couple years ago they added the live stream to mirror the radio broadcast and I just love it. They do pre game and post game and the live stream is very professional.

I do listen to it but I get annoyed because NKY football gets a backseat because they talk about all the GCL and GMC schools etc. Yeah they talk about Beechwood, COV Cath, Ryle, SK and Cooper. But most NKY schools and NKY football takes a ride in the backseat do not get mentioned as much as Ohio schools. Just think there is a bias on that radio show.

It's my single biggest complaint about 80% of radio broadcasts over the years.

I remember I was driving from Georgia to Lexington one October on the way to Keeneland and was listening to a local broadcast down around Spring Hill, TN to pass the miles. From the moment I picked up signal of the station until I lost good signal north of Knoxville in the mountains I never figured out the actual score of the game, the Quarter, or who was actually playing! What made matters worse... there were TD's scored by both teams! All I got was that the Tigers had extended their lead to 7 and that the Raiders now only trailed by 1 following their score and failed conversion attempt.

Later I figured out it was Marshall County vs. Spring Hill HS later thanks to Maxpreps and curiosity.

I definitely agree with this. When I'm listening to a game on the radio, I want that information as much as possible along with where the ball is on the field.

Hudl fan is typically much better than NFHS for the teams that utilize it. And its free

Score, time, down & distance, yard line and that's probably what most care about.

We were blessed in the 90s and 2000s in NKY with the game of the week. Randy Jones, Kevin Rengering were awesome.
