Highlands Baseball or Spring Break vacation?

Featured Replies

I heard tonite at the HHS-Shelby Co. hoops contest that the baseball team had less than 20 kids tryout...and only 6 Sophs!

DMZ, that number seems low according to the coaching staff. Anyway, I did hear that more boys are showing up each day for different reasons. Keep in mind the basketball players have not attended any tryouts to date. Remember these coaches are at a real disadvantage because they're not at school during the day to interact with the students. As for the Soph group, I have no clue.

Also very important to note that Monday was a KEA or PD day at most school districts so the kids were not in attendance. I'm sure that had an effect, I know it did with us.

As of today, last day to come out for the team, there are 31 kids without counting basketball players. I heard they will have cuts on Friday, yes cuts, so there seems to be more kids out for the team than people think. Even with the new spring break rule, there are still enough kids that are committed to playing baseball. Hopefully this will kick start the program for years to come.

I highly competitive team anyway like the Colonels, Royals, Kings, etc. Those teams have weekend tourneys all the time and bring in scouts to check out the best in the area. Those coaches are not going to waste their time if you are not committed to baseball. And not playing high school baseball is not going to get you recognized by anyone because you will not be playing for one these elite summer teams.

Understand your post...But the BG Chiefs is a pretty competitive Team as well. Sure they were one of the etc...

Oh I understand alot more than you think. I also KNOW that knothole championships don't really mean alot when it comes to developing talent at the high school level. Sorry, I don't mean to sound like a jerk, it's just a matter of fact. Still, talent without commitment is a cancer. Whether the lack of commitment is from the player or the parents really doesn't matter. Other players who HAVE made the commitment will see this situation as a negative, no ifs ands or buts and they should. If a vacation is what is keeping kids from playing baseball, then I seriously question the the decisions being made by those individuals. That's not a slam, I've made plenty of bad decisions in my time and I'm not throwing stones, I just know the commitment necessary to have a winning program and this doesn't fit. Baseball is a game that requires attentiuon to detail and repetition, repetition, repetition. Taking a week off in the middle of the season makes that impossible.

...just musing, but I wonder how many of the kids that "make the team" and do not see much PT bolt south at Spring break?

Spring break will be a problem at Highland's as long as Coach Johnson teaches at a school that doesn't have their break the same time as Highland's. You will never do trip's on spring break because of this. Somebody needs to find him a job in the Ft. Thomas school system.

I believe that question was asked yesterday at tryouts. Coach was making sure that nobody was planning on leaving during the break before cut's were made.

...and I'm SURE all the kids spoke the truth! Bench jockeys will bolt!

What if the team goes to Gatlinburg?

You're lucky to get a game in before spring break so if someone bolts for sitting one game I'm not sure you want them anyway...

Bird's infield looks pretty well set around the horn: 1B-Rawlings 2B-Ader 3B-Muench SS-Allen. Outfield and Battery are yet to be determined? Who will fill it in...heard Blake Newman will be the "utility" man in the infield.

Starting SS, and #3 hitter goes on senior trip, no other senior on baseball team goes, gone over a week. (this happened) How would you handle it?

It would not be a question of how I would handle it when he returns. He would have already known that there would be no spot on the team SHOULD he decide to head south for a week.

Why is that this seems to only be an issue in NKY at Highlands?

Football! I would like to know how many schools actually do spring football in NKY. I know this might throw this topic off but just curious. Then I think you will be able to link the two as to why the baseball program is where it is right now
