Great post and you are 100% correct imo. The question and argument for this thread though is the fact that the Higher Court (The Head Baseball Coach) has already ruled and some people just won't accept the law. There won't be any trying out or making the team if they are not commited for the entire year.

The law here protects the dedicated kids or the kids who just love baseball from being penalized and let down by a few (and here in lies the problem - "a few" could not saying would be the difference makers imo for this program to reach some higher goals)

I will predict some "I wish I would've" coming in a few years from some of these kids when they become old and grey and have nothing better to do than play on BGP on Fridays.

Did this problem arise when you played baseball? It sounds like you have some ghosts in the closet over this situation? If you were the coach how would you handle this? Also knowing that you have some of the best baseball talent not playing how would you get these kids to come out?

Tell them that they are all D1 baseball prospects and tell them I can't wait to see them playing at Great America or Wrigley. How bout that :banana:

I know when I played not so long ago i was pleased when we as a team got to go out of town for a spring break touranment, nothing was better for me than to go out of town with my buddies, stay in an appartment and play baseball all day.

I think our school administration helped me in making this decision about whether or not to stay for games. Before I was head coach - in fact it was three coaches and over 10 years ago - the baseball team went down to Florida and several players got drunk. The administration said no more trips to Florida. It was like that for several years until I got named head coach. Then I wanted to take the team to Hazard to play. The players and parents were all for it (not so much it was Hazard but the chance to get out of town) and the administration was not really for it. My basic argument was "It's Hazard - how are they going to get into trouble there?" No offense to Hazard because I like the town but I think it helped some.

I don't think you are listening to what everyone here is saying to you. Talent DOES NOT MATTER if the heart is not committed. It's just that simple. If you cannot forego a trip, a vacation, a big party basically, in order to be committed to the sport then do not play. No coach in their right mind can condone what you are asking here. I don't care if A-Rod is walking the halls in Ft. Thomas, if he doesn't commit, who needs him? You dance with what brung ya' as I've always said.

If your more worried about spring break than you shouldn't even think about playing baseball. That is the problem with HHS baseball there is no commitment to it. Let me put it this way. Baseball in Ky is what, a 30-35 game season. If a kid misses baseball for spring break for four years he could be missing around 25-30 games. Thats a whole season of games that this kid misses to go on spring break instead of being there. Thats a whole year of experience lost, in game situations never experienced, and commitment shown as being else where. The fact that people complain about this amazes me. There are hundreds of kids that get cut that would kill to be in their sons shoes to play baseball for their high schools but don't get that opportunity. Its a matter of commitment and priorities. As a coach Im playing the 9 kids that have shown that they want it more. Plain and simple.

Here's what you don't understand, the baseball talent is unbelieveable in Ft.Thomas. In the last two years between the Sophmores, Freshmen, and 8th graders there have been 3 Greater Cinn. Knothole Baseball Championship team's.(90% Ft. Thomas kids) It use to be because of spring football that the kids didn't come out for the team, now its because of spring break. Just wish something could be worked out . Just a guess, I bet between these 3 teams there won't be 10 kids try out for Highlands this year.

Oh I understand alot more than you think. I also KNOW that knothole championships don't really mean alot when it comes to developing talent at the high school level. Sorry, I don't mean to sound like a jerk, it's just a matter of fact. Still, talent without commitment is a cancer. Whether the lack of commitment is from the player or the parents really doesn't matter. Other players who HAVE made the commitment will see this situation as a negative, no ifs ands or buts and they should. If a vacation is what is keeping kids from playing baseball, then I seriously question the the decisions being made by those individuals. That's not a slam, I've made plenty of bad decisions in my time and I'm not throwing stones, I just know the commitment necessary to have a winning program and this doesn't fit. Baseball is a game that requires attentiuon to detail and repetition, repetition, repetition. Taking a week off in the middle of the season makes that impossible.

Its not that hard of a decision.I spent 4 years of spring brakes running from Mason Co to Clark Co while my wife and daughter were basking in the sun of Florida.My son knew going in that if he played there were no spring brake trips as did the rest of the team.You only get one chance in life to play ball in high school and the beaches arent going to go away anytime soon.

Well said and I hope no players, that didn't attend a team camp, trip or didn't play, look back years from now and say.....

And i guess they will have 10 kids that are truly committed to make a difference. If i had to give my 4 weeks of spring break back to play a little High School baseball, i would do it in a minute. I gaurentee your son will feel the same way 20 years from now when he can take a vacation anytime he wants. This is why Harrison County is where they are and where they will always be and Highlands is still cleaning up the garbage behind the woodshed!!!!

Starting SS, and #3 hitter goes on senior trip, no other senior on baseball team goes,gone over a week. (this happened) How would you handle it?
