Featured Replies

Starting SS, and #3 hitter goes on senior trip, no other senior on baseball team goes, gone over a week. (this happened) How would you handle it?
See Post #26 and different starters would be in place.

Baseball at Highlands has a "club sport" aura to it. The primo atheletes do not clamor to work at / nor sacrifice for the priviledge to play. I can only recall a handful of players that ever did anything with BB post HS. Dale Mueller, Ron Malone, Louie Lee, Eric Glaser are all I can come up with....and that goes back to the early 70's. HS baseball isn't where you get your "looks"....it's the summer leagues. If ya' like it...play....if there's a better sport with more opportunity, then weigh the benefits.

There is no reason to even play summer ball if you don't play school ball. I guarantee if you don't play hs baseball nobody is even going to want you to play on their summer team...

I highly competitive team anyway like the Colonels, Royals, Kings, etc. Those teams have weekend tourneys all the time and bring in scouts to check out the best in the area. Those coaches are not going to waste their time if you are not committed to baseball. And not playing high school baseball is not going to get you recognized by anyone because you will not be playing for one these elite summer teams.

Here's what you don't understand, the baseball talent is unbelieveable in Ft.Thomas. In the last two years between the Sophmores, Freshmen, and 8th graders there have been 3 Greater Cinn. Knothole Baseball Championship team's.(90% Ft. Thomas kids) It use to be because of spring football that the kids didn't come out for the team, now its because of spring break. Just wish something could be worked out . Just a guess, I bet between these 3 teams there won't be 10 kids try out for Highlands this year.

I'm not sure if the 8th graders come into this equation at this time. As for the Sophomore group, there were only 3 players from HHS on the team that won the City Championship. One of them currently plays baseball for HHS, the other two have dedicated themselves to other sports at HHS. The rest of that team is at NewCath and Newport respectively. Regarding the current Freshman group, there will be anywhere from 8-11 trying out. All of these players have had very successful seasons in Division 1 and District 22 Knothole throughout the years. Again, nothing negative on my behalf here. Hopefully in time the teams success(es) will drawl more kids and new attitudes.

I was told from a pretty reliable source that Sam Liggett is in the mix for catching next year on the varsity level, he's only an 9th grader. I hope your right about drawing the kids back to the program. All it will take is a few select kids to maybe turn things around to get the other kids committed to program again.

True statement! But the primo athelete @ HHS looks at the BB program as an afterthought or "club" sport. The lack of success of the teams and the players, post-HS have created a laisse-faire attitude toward the program. Players not playing for much with a team heading for a one and done tourney will opt for the "vacation break" with their buddies/family. If sanctioned by the team...they just start on FB or Hoops. There's a reason the sport gets little or no attention ...apathy! JMO

Spring Break is where ever my son is playing baseball. This year spring break is in Nashville, TN.

IF he isn't focusing strictly on Football....Travis "Alfie" Alford, Frosh @ HHS, caught for the Muddogs on all those city Champ teams...HE'LL be in the mix also!!

Alford is one of those possible 11 I referred to in my last post. I agree with Family Tradition, Liggett has the potential right now to play at the varsity level. This Freshman group has 3 excellent catchers with Liggett, Alford and even Rizzo in my opinion. If the Freshman along with key Sophomores make the JV squad or above I look for possitive things from HHS baseball in the near future.

Does anybody know if Donnie Brown is trying out for baseball??? I watched this kid pitch last year in the city tournament and he is a very impressive young pitcher. The kid can bring some serious heat and has a nice curve...

Yes.

With school being closed on Thursday, did Highlands still have tryouts? If they did, how was the turnout?

Yes, tryouts began Thursday. They continue today and tomorrow (Saturday). About 30 players attended. There was some missing because of the confusion about school being canceled. I'm sure they've been contacted about today and tomorrows tryout. The basketball players that want to tryout will be held at a later date.

I heard tonite at the HHS-Shelby Co. hoops contest that the baseball team had less than 20 kids tryout...and only 6 Sophs!
