Ryle is at it again!

Last year they surprised everyone by winning the region. They lost their coach to the varsity job and here they are again, beating an undefeated Highlands team in the semifinals.

The future looks bright in Union!

Does anyone know when the 37th district championship will be for Freshmen?

 

Campbell County won it Saturday afternoon over Brossart, after they had defeated Scott Friday night.

Two great games tonight. Ryle comes out on fire in the second quarter outscoring Highlands 16-7 to end the half up 13. Highlands was in foul trouble all night. They made a good run at the end to cut the lead but the Raiders made their free throws down the stretch to revenge a 1 point loss in the regular season. :thumb:

 

Tight second game with Dixie playing shorthanded. They were missing two starters tonight, their point guard to sickness and their power forward was on crutches. Dixie has another big man get injured in the first half. Dixie struggled with the press tonight. They got in foul trouble in the third allowing CCH to pull away. Great game by Wellbrock for CCH.

It seems like CovCath is always in the finals of this tournament. There was a stretch in the 90's where they won it 6-7 years in a row

It was a great season for the young Birds!! Way to go. Great building block for the future of Highlands basketball.

You'd think the success on the freshman level would have led to more regional championships for CovCath in the 90's. What was the reason for this? They had tons of success on the freshman and jv level in the 90's but they did not win the region on the varsity level from '92 to '04. Was it coaching or was it more on player personnel?

Congrats to the Ryle Raiders on their win over the Birds. I have a question for anyone that may be able to answer this. I know the Birds got the 1st round bye but why did they end up in the same bracket as Ryle? Ryle seemed to be the other dominant team this year in Freshman basketball, I guess I can refer to the other thread and records but was just curious. This game last night seems like it could have been a Championship game.

Congrats to the Ryle Raider Frosh for pulling the upset of the previously undefeated 'Birds! Not to diminish the feat, but who played for HHS? Were they at full strength? The reason I ask is that the Varsity played and alot of Frosh play JV. Congrats to the Frosh 'Birds on an OUTSTANDING season.

Is playing the freshman regional at CovCath that much of an advantage for them? Most of those teams in the 90's only lost a few games each year if that. I believe the 3 freshman teams from 94-96 only lost 5 games and some of those were to Ohio teams.

 

Do most teams that host the regional tournament win it in the year that they host? I would think that this is not the case.

Birds should have been full strength as the JV game was cancelled and I am sure the Frosh Semis game would have taken precedence anyway. Tough loss but that group should be proud. They only won the State tourney last year as 8th graders down at KBA and then went undefeated this year. Its tough to run the table wire to wire.

Two teams were seeded: Highlands and Boone Co. The rest were a blind draw. Nothing you can do on where you draw. Dixie and Boone were also very dominant this year and played each other in the first round. Great season to both, good luck to Ryle in the finals.

Rematch from last year's finals on Wednesday. I think Ryle also has a pretty good class coming in next year.

For whatever reason, many of the top freshman back in the Coach T era choose not to continue their careers after either their freshman or sophomore years.
