This school system is the last stop for the dead wood school employees of Northern Kentucky. Brandt has cleared out most of the good old boys in Newport, about time. Look for yourself, see all the names of the administrators involved. With all that record things should happen at Holmes but it doesn't. The superintendent of Covington has been politically active for so long he has forgot to make schools better. Personally, having strong feelings about the school I would like for the state to take it over and review all the options, including forced retirement of many administrators.

Could not agree with you more.:thumb:

Easier said than done. You have to win the war at home also with a lot of these kids, that is the first place for direction that any kid gets. Administrators and teachers can only take this so far. I am willing to bet that there a lot of great teachers/adminstrators in the school and they truley care about the kids and will do anything for them, but can only do so much. It is going to take everybody involved in order to get the ball rolling on this one!

THERE ARE GREAT KIDS AT HOLMES HIGH SCHOOL. BUT THE WIDE VARIETY OF PROBLEMS KEEP THESE KIDS FROM BEING SUCCESSFUL BOTH IN THE CLASSROOM AND IN ATHLETICS.

They just need to start booting some of these kids out.

Stricter Rules + Enforcing Rules = Punishment (and documentation of that punishment)

The more documentation - the easier it is to get rid of some of these kids.

Then you start spreading the message that the SCHOOL IS NOT GOING TO PUT UP WITH ANY CRAP.

It CAN be done !!!

First let mw apologize for deviating from the thread. I went to Holmes many years ago. This week I walked at 5 Seasons with a classmate. He has a Doctorate in Engineering and just retired from Purdue where he was a Dept. Head. The last time we walked we ran into a fellow classmate and friend who has an advanced degree from MIT. He is retired from P&G. We ocassionally have lunch with anouther classmate who has an advanced degree in Math and he once taught advanced math at Walnut Hills. Another of my class mates graduated from Harvard and is a very highly regarded Marketing Consultant who lives in Country Squire Estates. Another has a ridge on the moon named after him. Our class produced at least a half dozen teacher- administrators and several business owners who sold their companies for many millions of dollars. One of our educators was a first team All-American football player. I could go on as there were many more successful people in our class, however, it is time to make a point.

There are 2 things we all had in common. First and foremost, we all had good parents. Secondly, we were all poor to middle class. There was far less scholarship money those days, but there was even more perseverance.

IMHO, you can overcome a lot of perceived obstacles, but the most difficult one of all to overcome is.... parents who just don't care enough to insist that kids "do the right thing". I sincerely hope that some day, my HS, will return to producing large numers of kids who are a joy to coach. By the way guys, we were anything but angels.

That makes sense because from what I have heard they have almost no one applying for the position. Furthermore, Holmes went after Marksberry but he told them he is staying put at Simon.

Really? I always thought that he would jump at the chance to coach his Bulldogs. It shows that Holmes has problems because a few years ago I think he would have made this move.

Jeff has built a nice program at SK. He is the A.D. and teaches a couple classes a day. Why would he want to leave this ideal situation to a situation that is in complete caoas w/educational problems and all the other problems that are going on.

In my opinion, Holmes will have a hard time filling this job w/an experienced coach w/head coaching behind him. As stated earlier, Holmes probably has as much talent as any school in NKY IF the right person can get all the athletes out to play.

Not looking to kick anyone when they are down, but is Holmes the worst job in NKY?

Oldbird, you have a style about you that I really enjoy. :D With that preface, the question couldn't have been good.

As to the question, given its current state of academic unrest, and considering some football issues as well, I'd say it's the "least attractive" of the big schools. At least in my opinion.

As Jim Rome would say when you start a phrase with, not to offend anyone - someone is about to be offended. I guess when you start one with not to kick anyone when they are down - someone is about to get kicked.

So is there any small school that is more unattractive?

Bracken County isn't exactly an attractive job either, but I know Chuck Faust and he has things going in the right direction from the Board of Education all the way down to the youth league. It isn't pretty right now and he has a long way to go, but he'll make that program respectable before he is all said and done.

^ At the rate Berea is going, I'd have to say they fit the bill.

I agree that he has things going in the best direction possible at SK, especially these last two years) and he is in the best position possible. I still feel though that a few years ago he wouldn't have blinked before jumping ship. It is where he came from and as you already said, the talent and athletic ability in that school is probably second to known.

Not looking to kick anyone when they are down, but is Holmes the worst job in NKY?

No, I dont think it is.

Worst job? No. I think Scott and maybe one or two of the single A schools is possibly worse off.

Toughest to win at? Yes.

From everything I understand, Holmes has some of the best facilities if not best.

Their weight room, lockerroom, and coaches offices are probably the best in the area from what I have heard.

Much can be said about the school and the negative publicity they have received. Much of the problem lies at the foot of the middle school. Their scores are included in with the high school baseline, which ultimately brings down the overall score.

Holmes to me is really a present day 4A school and very well could find themselves there in the next realignment.

How do you fix the perception is a tough one. The city itself has done very little if anything to truly help the district. Much of the new development has taken place 4th St to the river with very generous tax breaks.

In working in the social services industry I have worked with many of the people who live in Covington, that come through our offices. There are some major issues within the city itself.

Crime is an issue in the city. Anyone on here have 3 shootings in which 2 people died over a 3 day period this weekend, all within a mile and a half of their school doors?

Anyone? Highly unlikely.

That stuff just doesn't stay in the neighborhood, that stuff walks to school everyday and is there when those kids come home.

Something must be done within the city itself to break up the generational dependence on government housing. You have 3 projects, in which one of them is isolated from the city and one which is heavily segregated, and one that seems to function rather well. Most of the families that live in thoes things have not known what it is like to own property. When you own property you have values of self-worth.

Newport has been moving their citizens out of these projects and dispersing them through the city. Covington is just now in the waking stages of any ideological thought in this process.

Many clamor to just get rid of the kids, boot them out. Unique thought, however, the school district still has to educate these people, be it at the Alternative School or Homebound. They also still count against a schools test scores.

Students that are labled special ed, or even the new one OHI are very difficult to remove from schools.

So is the football position the worst job? Probably not, but it has the most all around challenges, which probably makes it the toughest.

It is going to take someone with a great vision and leadership who has a history of working in an urban school district.

The facilities are in place. The pay for the position is not as good as your county schools, but it is not too far off.

People have won there, though not big and consistently, but you can win there. Someone who is not looking to use it as a stepping stone and willing to stick it out will have success. It may not be immediate, because of the amount of obstacles one must go through, but you can win there.

It will be interesting to see who goes for this job and is ultimately hired.

Has anyone heard any rumors on this job? I still think anyone that can corral the youth at Holmes has an unlimited resource of talent. If a special enough coach comes in and teaches these kids not only football but how to be special young men, this could be a juggernaut even though they're in a district that is fully loaded with Highlands and Cov Cath!

Where's Coach Trosper?

Where's Coach Trosper?

He's the new head coach at Conner.
