That would be a good hire. Was a great QB. Has he been coaching anywhere recently as an assistant?

I am not sure what he has been up to.  Anyone?

Putting out a press release to announce that you've applied for a job is definitely a bold way to apply for a job. I don't know Winston Guy from Adam so I certainly am not trying to disparage him....c

If I were making the decision to work at Lex Cath, my first call would be to Chad Pennington, and my second call would be to Chad Pennington.  After that, I would open up for applicants.

Interesting, Coach Wallace retiring now Coach Baisch coming to St. X. Maybe coach in waiting?

"After working at a bank for a couple years and volunteering as a coach at Paris High School, he’s decided to become a Catholic missionary."

It appears he is still doing the college campus mission work. Does not talk about coaching.

Could this possibly be an internal hire?

I’ve wondered the same thing.  Possibly Nigel Smith taking it back? I know he remained on staff at least one, if not both of the years that Nick was there.

This is obviously still a good job. If you had everybody on this site make their list of Top 25 jobs? LexCath would be on every single one of them.

HOWEVER, there are some ‘on the surface’ strikes for luring the type of coach that I’m sure is expected to be hired from the Clays Mill Road faithful.

1- We all know that leaving the public sector for the private, in this state? HUGE obstacle for those still in KTRS & deep into it at that? To give up. The flip side of that? If I’m already retired then I have the chance to swim in more cash coming in than ever in my life.

2-The pay as it relates to the above. I could be grossly underestimating that, though. (On LexCath’s end)

3- About to be 4th coach in 7 years? Again, on the surface? Screams “tread lightly”.

4- …and, this might be the biggest one that nobody is talking about, and while it’s - right now - just for the next two years? The realignment did them zero favors. Instead of waiting to see CAL or Lou Central in the semis? They are now going to see them in the 2nd round at the very latest. I’ll even throw DeSales into that equation & Bardstown being in their district is far from a pushover (goes without saying).

If I’m a LexCath fan? Don’t think for one minute that some likes of the names you hope go after this aren’t thinking:

”You’re about to hire your 4th coach in 7 years. These next two years you’re about to be paired up right out of the gates with two teams that have dog walked you the last three meetings with them (CAL x 2, Central x 1) + another you’re also O’fer against the last two times you’ve played them (DeSales)…and, I haven’t even mentioned Bardstown.”

All of your points are definitely a big part of taking the job!

Your first point is a big decision for a public school coach and his family. Catholic would have to target someone that is very young which I'm sure they don't want or someone that is retired, maybe Catholic wants that maybe they don't. The coaches that are 10-15 years in are making a HUGE decision to leave public retirement.

Your third point has to be explained for sure!! Why has there been so much turnover? Some of the moves are valid and some of the moves are questionable at best. But if you truly look at the history of Catholic you find tradition and pride. Coach Sphire built the program the right way and won a title. Coach Letton won a title after Sphire and kept Catholic in the state championship conversation. The years that follow Letton Catholic sees some highs and lows in the program. Pride in the program has never faltered.

Your fourth point has to be taken into consideration! That being said, if you want to be a head coach at a top tier program shouldn't you except top tier competition? Catholic has always had top tier programs get in their way, Boyle and Highlands. If it wasn't for Boyle Co and Highlands, Catholic would be considered one of the best programs in the state. BUT that'e the game! Adapt and overcome, Catholic hasn't done that against those programs.

The biggest question I think a coach would have, is the administration willing to do what is necessary to get the program back to the late 90s and 00s? If the answer to that is yes, it's a no brainer. But Catholic admin has a lot of work to do to catch up with the true top tier programs. If I live in Lexington and I have a son that has the potential to play college football why would I pay tuition to send him to Catholic when I can send him to Douglass for free? Until Catholic can argue valid points and sale their football program, nothing is going to change.

No doubt you want competition, however, the Boyle/Highlands days, I don’t think both were staring at them right out the gates within the first two rounds were they? (Honest question there)

LexCath/Boyle was the region title to set up a match up with Highlands.

And I should have explained a little more on the 4th- the competition right out the gates (that they haven’t faired remotely well against in match ups dating back the last 9-10 years) + the fact that they’ve already had a lot of unexpected turnover.

I would have to go back and look on KHSAA but it’s Saturday haha. But Catholic beat Louisville Central to go to the state championship in 14 maybe?

In most recent history, prior to the change of division, it’s been Boyle in the 2nd round three times and Belfry once. A lot of 3rd round matchups with Boyle and semifinal matchups with Highlands throughout the 00s and 10s.

As far as coaches leaving

Perry took a job at Troy/Bethiany took a job at Moeller/Baisch back to St X. Coaches are leaving for great jobs! Catholic needs stability, a coach that wants to be there for years.

Coming up on a month since this was posted. With this being such a high caliber position, this late in the game, who are the real candidates? Shockingly this one seems rather quiet.

Any news here?

I'm hearing Trenton Fields, Winston Guy, and a 3rd (did not get the name here). I do not personally see the first two options as being the next coach, but that's a wild guess. I still think this is a very attractive job.

Three names I heard today were Chris McNamee, Joe Chirico and Winston Guy. The first name if true has me scratching my head.

Tell us about Chris and Joe. More familiar with Winston.

Chirico current coach at GRC. Won a state title at Paintsville. He’s a para pro. Great guy.
