6A RPI Rankings - 2024

Out of state games do not explain Barren County over Male. The simple fact that it can produce this absurd a result should tell us that the system has major flaws.

But you're ignoring the first part of my post.

It isn't fair to judge the RPI this early in the season. If KHSAA would wait 3-4 more weeks until they release their initial RPI results then there wouldn't be this kind of strong reaction. In 3-4 weeks, that ranking will look completely different and much more accurate (outside of teams who have played out of state games).

We have seen KHSAA RPI enough the past couple years to know it has flaws that go beyond out of state opponents.

  • I'm glad you pointed that out. I've seen some confusion about the bracketing. Below is from the KHSAA with an explanation along with the district breakdowns. https://khsaa.org/2023-and-2024-curre

Rankins should not need disclaimers.

If a student has four grades - 100, 100, 100, and a 0, are they a C student? After 7 games, if they have six 100s and a 0, are they a B student? That's what the math says, although after seven grades it appears to be a much more accurate grade of the student. Bottom line, the more data the better the ranking. If the RPI came out for the first time after Week 7, it might not be perfect, but it would be a lot closer to reality than it is today.

More data doesn't make things better if the data is bad. The way out of state games are handled is bad.

Agreed. That was said. That is the major issue that needs to be fixed with RPI.

OUTSIDE of that- it is not fair to judge the RPI... yet.

We must wait for a few more weeks before we all start complaining about the rankings. EXCEPT for teams who play out of state games... They get screwed. That MUST be fixed by the KHSAA if we are to continue using RPI.

The class factor needs to be scrapped plus correct the out of state opponents issue.

After yesterday’s results, Trinity is now the #1 team in the western “half” of our Commonwealth in 6A. Riherds does not show this information. You must go to KHSAA/Regular season Football for current RPI information. You should find Ryle and Manual as 1 &. 2 in 6A. Per Douglass coach, Trinity’s district is in the West when playing Male’s district this November.

Teams are sorted in order of RPI. Not sure why Jenkins listed in 6A though.

For whatever reason, that whole district is in the 6A RPI (Jenkins, Phelps, Morgan County & Jackson County) and has been for a couple of weeks now.  I guess nobody at the KHSAA is paying much attention to it.  It really does show how crazy the RPI is however, with both Phelps & Jackson County ranked in the top 1/2 of 6A.
