They lost me when you have teams who are undefeated have a winning percentage less than 1.000%.  I guess it all shakes out in the end.

It could shake out better at the end if tweaked formula or just adopt Calpreps for seeding.

When winning 4 games against this schedule gets a 6A school the #2 rating in the system that actually determines the playoff seedings, then something must be done!

According to the very RPI rating system that vaulted Barren to the #2 spot in 6A, the teams they beat are #'s 16 & 18 four classes below, #25 three classes below & #10 two classes below.

That math just ain't mathing.

Same system that has another team with a 163.4% winning % 4 games into the season.

Same system that counts games against Cincinnati St X, Center Grove IN, and St Edward OH as lesser opponents than the current #20 Class A school in Kentucky.

While I know what you mean, just to clarify, it doesn't determine playoff seedings. Those are based on district games in the regular season. It does determine pairings and home-field advantage in the third and fourth round. I highly doubt Barren County is playing at that point - and the RPI will likely have changed at that point as well. However, the math formula is definitely a bit wonky.

Just use Calpreps.

Have heard multiple times over the years that Calpreps should be used.  Can anyone give a brief overview to their methodology or is it basically subjective?  Obvious that KHSAA with RPI has tried to take the subjectivity out.  But the complexities of expanding OP and OOP calculations to non-Ky opponents becomes too complex.

I think we go through this same conversation every year when it is first released. It could all be avoided if KHSAA waited until week 6-8 to even start to release the RPI. It will change significantly by the end of the season.

I still believe the only issue is the out of state games. If we fix that, it should be pretty accurate.

Not exactly sure of their methodology, but here is a link to how Calpreps' ratings work:

https://calpreps.com/ratings.htm

And for the sake of this discussion, here are the rankings this week. RPI on the left, Calpreps on the right. I think you can guess which one is more accurate (although 6A RPI is probably as close to correct as any class this week).

  1. Ryle --- TRINITY
  2. Barren County --- MALE
  3. Manual --- ST. XAVIER
  4. Bullitt East --- MANUAL
  5. Male --- FREDERICK DOUGLASS
  6. Madison Central --- RYLE
  7. Trinity --- BRYAN STATION
  8. Oldham County --- GREAT CROSSING
  9. St. Xavier --- MADISON CENTRAL
  10. Frederick Douglass --- BALLARD

Thanks very much.  My first read gave me pause.  This 78 year old brain needs a few more passes before I will pretend to grasp it.  But, it is apparent that there is no subjectivity in the calculations which is very good.

Out of state games do not explain Barren County over Male. The simple fact that it can produce this absurd a result should tell us that the system has major flaws.
