Covington Catholic 42 Simon Kenton 3

Cov Cath did a good job of getting turnovers in the red zone. SK drove the ball at times but I believe threw 4 picks inside the red zone. Hard to keep the game close when things like that happen.

This score makes me remember the great Dennis Green’s infamous post game comment.  Well the first part of it…”They are who we thought they were”

I still stand by my comment from last week after the Highlands loss: Cov Cath won’t lose until “maybe” State Semis…. Who’s with me???? I had some doubters last week.

I am not sure that this game should keep being scheduled. No benefit to either team.

I have to agree. In 26 games between Cov Cath and Simon Kenton, the Pioneers have a grand total of 16 touchdowns.

I know putting a non-district schedule is no easy feat, but I'd personally like to see Cov Cath replace the Simon Kenton and Campbell County games with other opponents in the very near future.

Who makes sense for them? Another Kentucky team or an Ohio team? With the way the RPI is set up, CovCath gets more points playing SK or Campbell County than a top-tier Ohio club, right?

I hope we play them next year. I just hope they fix the defense.

I see both sides to this but tend to agree with you on this.   Not sure who you would put in their place.   A 4A vs 6A helps with RPI tremendously as opposed to scheduling an out of state school which does little for or even hurts your RPI.  Honestly, I think this schedule is what gave us home field advantage all throughout the playoffs.  I was happy not to have to travel to Paducah last year in the semifinals which I think ultimately gave us the advantage in that game.   I understand the harder schedule might prepare you for a more difficult playoff run, but I think now that our numbers are down some you also have to take into effect injuries when you play big schools.   The last two times we played Elder we came off the field wounded, and the next man up wasn't a great option.   I would keep SK on the schedule for now.

I think it’s been 6-7 years now but like to see CovCath get back to playing Kings OH, Indianapolis Bishop Chatard or that Columbus St Francis de Sales. Those were fun games to watch. The schedule now is definitely not that exciting especially with the district opponents. Obviously keep Highlands and Beechwood but get some more exciting games on the schedule. I know, I know, it’s about the RPI and the in-state teams.

I remember not too many years ago people were saying that the Beechwood game should not be played anymore.  I say keep Simon Kenton on the schedule. It's good for KHSAA RPI.

I too yearn for Cov Cath to again schedule opponents like the ones you mentioned. I think the perfect school to reach out to would be East Central. An Indiana power within close proximity who has played Campbell County a few times the past decade and has historically played GCL schools. Cov Cath doesn’t have to play a GCL school, get a good program like Anderson on the schedule.

Great minds think alike. I also was thinking East Central and Anderson to go with the others I mentioned. I think we even played Sycamore and Oak Hills back in 2016 but they might be too small a  school. Anderson and East Central would be perfect.

If the KHSAA didn't completely fumble RPI so badly I'd love to see us go back to scheduling on Ohio team or two. But things being as they are, I realize that the KHSAA's RPI system effectively penalizes teams for playing out-of-state opponents.

So in the first two games each year where a team plays a lower-classified program, they don't get their RPI dinged by having to factor in the multiplier from playing a lower classified team. But the flipside is that a lower-classified team always does get to factor in the multiplier from playing a higher-classified team. So Cov Cath has pretty masterfully scheduled their non-district run in this cycle...

Ryle - 6A opponent, so the result gets a 6A multiplier applied to Cov Cath's 4A RPI
Highlands - 5A opponent, so the result gets a 5A multiplier applied to Cov Cath's 4A RPI
Simon Kenton - 6A opponent, so the result gets a 6A multiplier applied to Cov Cath's 4A RPI
Dixie Heights - 5A opponent, so the result gets a 5A multiplier applied to Cov Cath's 4A RPI
Beechwood - 2A opponent, so the result gets a 4A multiplier applied to Cov Cath's 4A RPI
Campbell County - 6A opponent, so the result gets a 6A multiplier applied to Cov Cath's 4A RPI

My hopes would be to replace one of the 6A games (Simon Kenton and Campbell County) with another 6A team from Louisville or Lexington...Bryan Station, Ballard, St. X, Douglass, Bullitt East, Manual, Madison Central.

The Beechwood game is where we use one of our two RPI "get out of jail free" cards were we don't have our RPI dinged by playing a lower-class team. I know they obviously would prefer not to schedule a second one of those games, but I wouldn't mind maybe dumping a second of those two 6A teams in favor of quality 5A team...Woodford County, Scott County, Great Crossing, Owensboro, Bowling Green, Pulaski County.

I'd also be open to replacing Dixie Heights with a slightly stronger 5A team. Although I do like the fact that Dixie has maintained a pretty middle-of-the-pack RPI while also being a pretty likely opportunity for a win for us.
