The Wing-T, championship offense or glass ceiling offense?

Hybrid wing-T is the name given to the Herschel Moore/Wes Elrod version of the offense. It is more jet/rocket based with some option. They typically use a metric ton of formations. They also tend to have a distinct form of verbiage that is very different. The OL are given letters according to if they are play side or backside. The play calls tell the OL which guy kicks and which guy wraps. So they can basically draw up any blocking scheme they want.

Both Coach Moore and Coach Elrod have passed away. Getting their materials now is more difficult. The hybrid version basically grew out of Georgia and Tennessee.

I got to hear Coach Moore at a clinic in Etown one year, late 80’s or early 90’s. His system was impressive. Excellent football coach.

Just out of curiosity, why would any AD care about the Xs and Os that a particular coach is running?   To play Devil's Advocate here, if an AD is that much of an expert of scheme, maybe they shou

Good Coaching wins ball games. I don't care the offensive system.  Triple option is now called Zone read or RPO - it is option football.  Football comes down to Blocking down and kicking out

You also have a huge surge in the growing Gun-T. This is where alot of coaches are able to do exactly as you’re suggesting. Kenny Simpson has popularized this version and sold his system all over the country.

it takes Wing T series and re-does it all from the shotgun using a combination of a Wing and Spread formations. This allows teams to be in shot gun to run all of the runs such as Buck and Trap, but still have a passing game. Many have started even adding AirRaid passing concepts to it. Thus people calling it the “Wing Raid”

Kenny was our April guest on our podcast and did a super job.

It can be done. Just need the right skill players. Need a QB who can run the triple option and throw the ball accurately. Need receivers who can block well and catch the ball. Need running backs who can run the option and line up as receivers, run routes and catch the ball. Not easy but can be done!

I know a ton of coaches that would love to have that talent combination!

So, Dale Mueller's offense that won him a crap ton of state titles.

Kenny’s system is a little different. It isn’t built to move from gun to understand center. He also doesn’t run trap from what I know.

Kenny’s system is Buck, Counter, and versions of one back/OG power. Almost everything is built off of those three schemes. Some years he has run a little zone or duo along with some other pin and pull stuff.

Rick Stewart designed his pistol wing-T to be run from the gun and under center. Stewart’s stuff is kind of a mix between old school wing-T and a little bit of the hybrid stuff.

Dale Muller’s offense is kind of a different animal. He did a clinic on it after he retired. They did run Buck but it was a little different than traditional buck sweep. He also said he only ran it to the boundary. They did run a kind of roll out /QB run package that looked like Buck. They ran counter GT. No trap. He had some of the craziest blocking rules (and honestly kind of brilliant) that I’ve ever seen. I’ve never seen a run game put together like his.

Right, it was a very frustrating offense when you are the opposing defense.

My point was his offense had wing t origins, just out of gun.  The counter and their waggle action off of it just shredded opponents and buckled LBs for years.

It was fun to watch though.

And his blocking schemes were difficult to explain to your DL and LBs on what to expect because nobody else did it.

I’m not sure the offense had any wing-T origins. Counter GT was their only gap scheme. Everything else was man blocked. That was the crazy part there were no real rules.

The wing-T is not an option offense. You can add it but it is not an option based offense like split back veer, Flexbone and some I or wishbone teams.

The offense is based out of series where the backfield action and the blocking scheme look very similar to each other (if not almost the same) within a series.

There are some teams that will move back and worth (look up Rick Stewart) but it is rare. Stewart is somewhere between a traditional wing-T and a hybrid wing-T guy. I believe the new coach at Oldham county is a hybrid guy.

You can run buck sweep blocking from the gun and a few other schemes. They aren’t as deceptive nor do they hit as fast. A number of them take adjustments. It would really come down to if you felt the juice was worth the squeeze and if you had the guys that could really coach both.

Not sure if I agree with this one.  Delaware incorporated the option into their offense in the 90's, and it made a positive impact.  I agree with you about the Wing-T being series football.  Buck series (20), belly series (80), counter series (30), and, yes, option series (40).

I think the Wing-T could work now as well or better than it ever did due to defenses and defensive coaches having less experience going against it.

For some teams, I think it would be much more effective than trying to run a spread offense without the players to do so.  Few things look uglier.  For many teams, it is not really about a championship but being as good as your particular school can be.  Offenses like the Wing-T and/or the Flexbone could be the equalizer for many schools who continue to try to put the square spread peg into the round hole.  Before you can be great, you first have to be good.  Some of these "old-school" offenses could help some schools be more competitive.

November of 1992, went up to visit Coach Duffy @ Highlands & watch practice.

Sitting in his office, asked the question…”Why the switch from the triple option to the wing T?”

His answer, “With the triple, if your QB got hurt, your season is over. With the Wing T, my son can hand off the ball.”

Believe they beat Ashland that week and may have gone on to win state title.

Watched their defensive line scheme period… Rob Reynolds , John Schlarman & others (wish I remembered their names)

Crazy size, talent & motors.

Coach Elrod is still alive! He runs jetsweep.com (great resource)! He installed his offense at Mclean Co.

What is Buck? That is one I have never heard of.

Series in the wing t that has trap and waggle off of it. Wing, TE, OT all block gap/down/backer, front side and backside guard pulls. FB dives like he's running trap, QB rolls out opposite like he's running waggle.

Lots of dives & a few sweeps as well. Incredibly simple, but I believe those Perryville boys won pad level every night coming out of that 4 point stance.
