And just two short years ago these kids were pretty much written off.  Showed progress last year and it has continued.  Guess that is what happens when coaches teach them the game and how it is played

Campbell County Freshman:

Wed Aug 28 vs. Beechwood 6:00pm
Thu Sep 5 at Harrison (OH) 6:00pm **
Thu Sep 12 at Conner 6:00pm
Thu Sep 19 vs. Cooper 6:00pm
Wed Sep 25 at Covington Catholic 6:00pm
Thu Oct 3 at Dixie Heights 6:00pm
Thu Oct 10 vs. Highlands 6:00pm
Thu Oct 17 vs. Ryle 6:00pm
Thu Oct 24 at Simon Kenton

** Haven't been able to confirm the game against Harrison, but they hosted Harrison last year and the varsity team played Harrison as well. Varsity is playing them again this year, so I would assume the freshman team will be playing again as well, given the open spot in the schedule for the same week as last year.

Last year Beechwood played the Moeller B-Squad and won 41-13, while Highlands played Elder and lost 31-7. This year Highlands has swapped Elder for Moeller on their schedule, and Beechwood has Moeller on their schedule again.

Any word on whether those two games are against Moeller's A-Squad or B-Squad?

Anyone know how freshman football works for the small schools?   I know at a certain point it has to be numbers game.  Specifically, is Beechwood able to field a full JV and freshman team, along with their varsity team?

I believe Highlands beat Elder last year at the Pitt

Yes. Highlands beat Elder 31-7 last season. I believe they will be playing the Moeller Blue (B) squad this season.

Ahh, that's my bad. I had the score recorded backwards I'm my spreadsheet. My mistake.

It's just all a matter of participation. With the Spartan Youth football program mirroring a good bit of the Beechwood school district, plus a lot of Beechwood dad's coaching the Spartan teams over the years, they've always maintained a really solid base of kids coming into the football program. I know Beechwood hasn't had a full-freshman team for quite as long as some of the other bigger schools in NKY, but they always have a ton of football participation, regardless.

Beechwood's senior class a couple of years after I graduated high school only had a total of 6 boys from the entire grade that DIDN'T play four years of football. Those 6 guys came to every game with T-I-G-E-R-S painted on their chests ?

Why does Campbell always have good football programs at the middle school level but they usually struggle at the high school level?  Maybe the better football players transfer to other schools?  They are always one of the top teams in NKY in almost all their other sports but continue to struggle in football.  I don’t get it.

Great question and seems like it's been like that for a long time.  When I played 30+ years ago it was like that too.   Solid freshman team but when we played them senior year, we blew them out.   Same goes for my oldest and youngest sons'.  My oldest played with Caleb Jacob, and Campbell Co was the only team to beat them. By the time he was a senior Campbell was off of the schedule, but They didn't become the power that they could have been.  My youngest is a senior now and Campbell beat them freshman year pretty handily.  I guess we see where they stack up this year.   Seems like a lot of missed opportunities there.

Beechwood usually has varsity, JV and freshman teams. The freshman teams now include 8th and 9th graders. Last year though, Beechwood got into a bit of a numbers situation and was needing to play some freshmen on JV. They cut some JV games because of that.

Beechwood will be having an 8th grade football team this year so numbers must be good.

So is Beechwood not dressing any 8th graders at the freshman level this year? I know in the past they had trouble being able to dress true freshman teams every year before they started dressing all the 8th graders. I wonder if they are going back to more of a Froshmore type thing to address the issues they had with having to cancel some JV games last year.

Beechwood will have a 6/7th grade team, 8th grade team and a Freshman team as well as JV.  The problem last year was that somewhere around 14 kids decided not to play. Either concentrating on other sports or just not playing football any longer.  Some of that might have had to do with the uncertainty of the coaching change after Rash retired. These would have all been sophomores and juniors last year.  There would have been no problem playing a JV schedule if they hadn't lost that many players.  Many of them decided not to play after the schedule had already been released so that's why they ended up in a bit of a bind about what to do at the JV level.  I don't think there will be any problem going forward as the numbers are good at all levels.

Any of those sophomores coming back this year?

I'm not sure if any of those guys are coming back or not. The incoming sophomore class has great numbers so that will help tremendously.  I do believe a handful of kids are playing who haven't played since middle school/freshman. That will help with JV numbers as well.
