Hopefully, the knee injury isn't serious. 

Some say students storming the court/field after a big upset win is just part of the college game and is fine. That there are hardly ever any incidents. 

So should they be stopped completely, if so, how?

 

I've seen a few hot takes where Filipowski is being accused of trying to trip and shove that student and basically got what he deserved. I think those takes are trash, personally.

I wouldn't go as far to say he deserved anything but it looks to me from watching that replay a few times he definitely went on offense (maybe as a reaction to protect himself).  Look how fast his arms move all of the sudden.   And it also looks like he extended his walking gait (to trip) to me.  Maybe my take is trash too but the video doesn't lie.  Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

They should at least have a $100 thousand dollar fine like the SEC does, currently the ACC has no policy or fines for court storming.

After watching it several more times, I think the shove is definitely an aggressive move on his part. What we don't know is was it in response to being hit or in anticipation of being ran into.

I'll back track on calling those takes trash, as it can definitely be in the eye of the beholder.

Fines don't work...look at SEC.

Maybe they could make an announcement to have the fans give the opposition 15 seconds or something to clear the court.  Maybe that works, maybe not.  

 

Outside of that, start making teams forfeit the games if there is a court storm.  Either the fans would stop, or the teams would have enough security on site to prevent it.  It would only take one or two instances of a win being reversed to put a chill on that action. 

I do think Flipowski tried to trip the person. And honestly, I have no issue with it assuming it comes with any hint of self-defense. Fields of play should be safe havens for players, and when you cross that line, the rules of engagement between players/fans are off the table. Keep them off the courts unless we make it cool for players to rush the stands.

You either have to make the fine so high that schools take meaningful action (and in fairness, many institutions do not have the resources to combat a mob of people, nor does every circumstance allow for security to be set up) or you penalize the action itself. For example, if you storm the court, you forfeit the game. People may think this is too extreme, but if it became part of the culture with signs posted, constant stadium announcements at games, etc., it would become a thing of the past. There are countless examples of bad things happening when people come onto courts/fields, so let's put an end to it.

I saw going into this weekend the SEC had 3 and 2 of those were games Kentucky was in and the one at Wake was the ACC's 5th or 6th one.

I'd love to see that rule, if only because I'd love to watch it be enforced. 

Could they use the shot clock to help clear the floor then let the pandemonium ensue?

Then how long would it be before some "third parties" crashed a game by rushing the floor in the attire of their choosing to trigger a forfeit.

I feel like that would be tough in most venues but sure it's possible.

Seems unlikely that a fanbase would be able to get enough numbers in an opponent's home arena to make that happen. 

 

I think having the PA Announcer ask for 30 seconds or something after the final buzzer to allow the opposing team to clear the court could help.  They could direct the fans to where their team would be to allow them to celebrate together.  It might not work in every case, but it could help in a lot of cases. 

I don't want to see coaches getting ridiculed for pulling players a few seconds before the end of game again. It's not bad sportsmanship, it's about player safety.
