I always admire the commitment it takes to attend a service academy. It's so much more than sports and an education. It speaks to the fiber they're made of. Well done, young man.

What career path will he take up after his football days are over? I’ve always been curious if the guys that take a scholarship to a service academy, how many make a career out of it. Congrats, it’s a beautiful campus.

I could be very wrong about this, but I thought everyone who enrolled in the service academies made a commitment to join the armed services as an officer for 5-8 years immediately following their graduation in exchange for a full scholarship.

Just read that he has enrolled at UK and will join the team as a walk-on and transition to play Safety.

You can leave the academies after two years with no penalty or service obligation. If you stay beyond two years there is a service commitment (5 years, I think).

I didn't know that, I though they owned you for a solid 8 years or more.

They have an on-boarding process the summer before their freshman year, sort of a basic training if you will. I think several take that time to decide if they really want that life or not. I believe there is a mechanism to part ways during this process.

I remember it being 11 months of the year back in the day.

I think they are still at the academies around 11 months a year. They have 6 weeks of Basic Cadet Training in the summer before classes start.

Freshmen and Sophomores can disenroll without penalty at any time.

This is true for the Freshmen & Sophomores.  Once you attend the first day of class your Junior year, you are committed at that point for service.

I had the opportunity to go to the Air Force Academy in the 70’s and it was a 5 year commitment.  However, I was told that if I didn’t really want to make it a career to not do it.  That sealed the deal for me and I chose to not go.

It is 5 years, however if you go rated (Pilot, ABM, CSO) then it is 10 years after you get your wings. So more like 12.
