I think I read on Twitter this morning that it was even in Mayo's contract, that he would be the heir to replace Belichick.

That one didn't take long. It will be interesting to see how they replenish their talent, especially at QB.

I agree don’t know why so many were thinking Mike Vrabel was going.

What experience does Mayo have coaching that qualifies him for this?

It has much to do with being part of the Patriot culture, in my opinion. Since he was drafted he has been with the organization as a player or position coach.

That is the only thing I can figure and I think the Pats are taking a pretty big gamble here.

I think the Patriot Culture is a lot of people taking a some credit for Tom Brady's greatness. If Mayo can win then maybe there is something to that, but I'm skeptical.

As often as Brady is called the GOAT, which he is, I still think people don't realize how much of the Patriots' success was directly because of him.

Brady leaves and immediately wins a SB with the Bucs. Brady leaves and the Pats basically become irrelevant. You'll never convince me that those two things are not directly related. The Pats before Brady were an afterthought organization, his arrival leads to 6 Super Bowl wins. Tom Brady could have went to any inept organization of the 2000's (Bengals, Jets, Lions) and won because he was the GOAT. Jerod Mayo only won Super Bowls because of Brady, not the famed Patriot Way.

I don't think it was either or. I think both were necessary and a big part of the success. Belichick won that Super Bowl against Seattle. His defensive coaching led to the INT that won that game.

You are probably right. There are a lot of defensive stats that support the Patriots' defenses under Belichick were far superior to the rest of the league. 

If we had to assign credit, I'm going 70/30 in favor of Brady.

I think 70/30 Brady is a good number.

I like Brady, and do believe he was maybe the best. But at 70/30, I still think you're selling Belichick short. He for the most part assembled the talent (including Brady). Most of his star assistant coaches never became good head coaches (Wise, Mcdaniels, Crennel, Judge, Patricia, Mangini, etc). While Brady won without Bill, and Bill floundered after Brady left, the two were really perfect together, and I don't think Brady would have won 6 championships without Belichick. If it was all about QB's guys like Marino and Kelly would have won a Super Bowl.
