After reading through the thread, it got me thinking... when has Rupp been a big time intimidating place to play as many people have alluded to? :confused: As poor as the Erupption zone is, it was only introduced a few years back. If teams have ever been "scared" or whatever you want to call it, it was because the team was dominating.

 

This post my be the best post yet. You are probably right Rupp areana it self has probably never been much of a intimidating place for an opposing team to play at. But they were more scared of playing the actual team than anything else. Yeah now teams probably aren't as scared to play the actual basketball team anymore, so now it is showing that Rupp isn't intimidating it was just the team that was. So now we not only have a dead areana that is not intimidating but also a team that is not as intimidating anymore either. I will say this though that there probably isn't many teams out there that are intimadating to anyone anymore because of the parity in college basketball. So the places that does have intimidating homecourts would help out the team much more then...

I would say it has gone down, but parity in college basketball has brought it down ALL over the country.

 

Not at your Duke's, Florida's, UNC's where student sections dominate the lower arenas. Rupp could be much more intimidating if the lower level wasn't full of rich horse farmers.

Definitely agree.

Lots of good points here and I think it's a combination of several things making Rupp lose some of its mystique.

The main reason is the level of play and style of play. The team has been down a notch or two in recent years and Tubby's style of play is not as exciting as Pitino's was in the 90's. It seems like with Tubby's grid-it-out style of play, every other game the team goes through a 10 minute stretch where they only score 2-4 points and the "older" crowd loses it's intensity.

The point about UK's record against UL, Kansas, and Indiana only proves the point that the fans only get up for "big" games and not "all" games. Heck, Duke's women's team played the other night and as I flipped it on you would have thought the men's team was playing if you looked only at the crowd.

Which brings up the point of the student section. They created the Erupption Zone to try and bring some life to the crowd a few years ago but IT'S AT THE WRONG END OF THE COURT! You want your loud, rowdy student section behind or beside the VISITORS bench not your OWN (and have them shoting FTs into it in the 2nd half).

Unless it is a big game, the crowd at Rupp is not a huge factor but when 24,000 fans get fired up it CAN be the greatest home court in the country.

:laugh: Square block round hole, square block round hole, square block round hole...I really thought you were smarter than this, but maybe not...Please show me where in my post that you quoted that went against what I been arguing about for 3 weeks. If anything it backs up mine and still goes against what you been saying. You talk about how Rupp has a 90% winning percentage, but you have even admited are winning percentage at home lately hasn't been as good as before but it still is a good winning percentage compared to others. So during those years when Rupp definitely was a place that UK won mostly all the games, I said maybe it was because of teams being actually intimidating the actual team instead of Rupp it self. So teams being intimidated by the actual team, would overshadow Rupp being dead and would make Rupp look like a very tough place to play. When in fact it was just the team it self that had the other teams scared. But now with all the parity in college basketball, most players and basketball teams aren't intimidated by opposing teams and dont care how much tradition a school has, because teams today think they can beat any team and dont need to be intimidated by any actual team it self. Rupp Arena provides very little if any home court advantage for the Cats imo...I hate the way the seating is assigned at Rupp but it has been like that for 30 years now and it will never change...The only time half of the lower arena in Rupp Arena yells is when someone stands up in front of them.

I also want to reiterate this is a University/Rupp Arena problem.

 

I know some posters and people that read this board may be season ticket holders yet are sometimes ridiculed for not jumping up and down or not standing all the time throughout these threads (eg. being called old, snobish, etc.). Remember, it is not these people's fault the arena is laid out the way it is.

I know you have to be smarter than this.. This now to post in a row where you really have a weak argument back, and it really has nothing to do with what you quoted of mine. I really think that maybe you have seen the light, and are just to stubborn to admit it now, and so you try to turn things around that are just now there...

 

I have stuck by my original point all the way through this, and my last post didn't change anything. If you read that again I didn't say Rupp isn't intimidating anymore because the team isn't intimidating anymore. I said that maybe Rupp was NEVER intimidating to begin with and it was only the team, so no one during those years were able to realize that Rupp itself is a quiet place for the most part. So now since we dont have a intimidating team like we use to with all the parity in college basketball, it would atleast be good to have an intimidating homecourt that could help out the team...Come on dude I know you realized what I said in that post, because I know you have to be smarter than that.

 

I really have no clue why we have been arguing about this for so long, because you HAVE to know deep down that Rupp is a pretty dead place for the most part. I know maybe if you have seats down in the lower areana you wouldn't want to give them up and I understand that, but atleast admit that Rupp is a pretty dead environment compared to other top universities. And so something needs to be done to make it more of an exciting place and make it a better homecourt advantage for UK...
