Rupp Arena: Homecourt ADVANTAGE?

Featured Replies

I really have no clue why we have been arguing about this for so long, because you HAVE to know deep down that Rupp is a pretty dead place for the most part. I know maybe if you have seats down in the lower areana you wouldn't want to give them up and I understand that, but atleast admit that Rupp is a pretty dead environment compared to other top universities.

What top Universities are you talking about? UNC, IU, UCLA, UL, Texas, UConn?

Rupp is just as loud and intimidating as any of those, and I would say they are all elite basketball programs, with Texas being the only one that's even debatable.

Some of the seats my family has were moved when the Erruption zone was created. It wasn't that big of a deal because those seats weren't used by us that much anyway, however ticket prices increased even though the quality of seating didn't. Those two seats were moved to the opposite end, they kept them for a couple of years and just recently dropped them. Now we still have two seats in the LL but if the student section were to be moved again, as would our seats, I honestly doubt my parents would renew the tickets. It's just to much cash to give away when the reward keeps declining.

My point is that if Rupp was never intimidating, like you claim. Yet UK has still managed to win 90% of their games there since 75. It just doesnt seem worth it for the school to put theirself in a financially bad situation, just because it might make the game atmosphere a little more exciting. Personally if it were anything like Cameron, I would leave every game with a headache. Long story short, if it ain't broken, don't try to fix it.

I disagree with the bolded part, except for UL. Because they also from the stuff that I have read also have a areana that is pretty lifeless most of the time...I know I understand from all the money the university gets, that they aren't going to change a thing because I do get that. However me and many others still believe that they should change things at Rupp because it is pretty lifeless...Yeah I know UK has won over 90% of their games at Rupp since 1975, and that is what the whole thing I talked about with teams being intimidated of actually just playing UK and not because of Rupp. With the way things are today and so many good players, there is so much parity out there that no player is just going to be intimidated by a team and their tradition. However a crowd yelling and going crazy could make a team or just a couple of players on a team get a little nervous and do something they wouldn't do in a quiet Rupp like it usually is. Not to mention when the Crowd seems into it, it really seems to get the players an extra boast of energy...I know I completely agree with the statment if aint broke why fix it. But if you have noticed the last couple of years Rupp hasn't been a place where we won all the time like we use to. I believe last year we lost more games at Rupp than we have in a very long time. And now this year we already lost to Vandy a team that has now beat us twice in a row at Rupp. So I mean it might not be broke, but it is starting crack a little bit, so why not fix that crack before it does break all the way? However as I said before I know they aren't going to change anything, because of the money they get from donations and stuff. But it doesn't mean that me and MANY other people and just not students shouldn't think that there should be a change. Because there should be a change, but it wont happen...

I beleive that some of the student's seats have always been down low as long as Rupp has been open. And even in the early years there were quiet crowds just like these years. It is very hard and always has been hard to get the crowds pumped during the game for the Santa Claras and the Jacksonville States of the world and a whole lot easier against the Louisvilles and the North Carolinas. I don't think moving the students, who won't pick up all of their tickets now will do so even if there are more lower seats, nor do I think they deserve more lower arena seats. Back in the 70's and 80's the students were a lot more loyal as far as the numbers going to the games than those of today at both basketball and especially football.

As has been said on here before the students of the University of Kentucky pay their tuition for education and not for the right to see ballgames, despite of what is thought about that. And that tuition is not used to supplement the athletic program, which is self sufficient.

How much money did you have to pay for tickets when you were a student?:sssh:

I do believe it was a little less than what they pay now. :D
