Rupp Arena: Homecourt ADVANTAGE?

Featured Replies

UNC was considered a wine and cheese crowd and the school changed the seating, by moving the student down on the floor. There were a lot of complaints, but UNC stood by the their decision and now I think it is a lot harder for teams to play the Dean Dome.

Which makes you wonder why UNC was so dominating at Carmichael — they almost never lost at home. I remember when they first moved into the Smith Center people were howling about them actually losing a home game here and there.

Maybe we could have a throw back game and play one SEC game at memorial colusium and see how that affects everyone.

Honestly I think that would be awesome, to atleast do that once a year, and ONLY have students at the game. I mean the place it pretty much full on lottery night, so it definitely would be for an actual game, and would be very loud. Also it just would be cool to have a game there at memorial with all the tradition there...

You would have a half full arena then. That would do wonders for the perception of the program.

Why would it be a half full areana?

Because the students don't take the 4,000 tickets they get now. What makes you think they'll take 9,500?

The problem with the crowd at Rupp is that they have to feed off the team. So now that we are an ugly grind it out team, the crowd doesn't have much to fee off of. Unfortunately many times it helps the team if the home crowd is loud and the team can feed off them.

I have been going to home games for 25 years and the last 3 years the fans have really gotten bad and quiet. They barely stand up and cheer for a dunk anymore. The team feeds off of this and thus plays without emotion as well.

It's funny went to Memorial last weekend to watch Huntinton play. My dad was telling me how there would be people standing 3 rows deep in the walkways at UK games then. IN 68' Tenn. beat UK in Knoxville. When the game came to Memorial the students ripped the doors off the hinges and came into the game yelling to "Go to H___ TN". Then they proceeded to take oranges and fruit out and pelt the TN players as they came out for warm ups on unicycles. How fun would that have been. That is home court advantage!!

It has already been said that many students don't show up because they get crummy seats. Seems reasonable they would show up if they knew they were getting the fat cats' courtside seats for a game. They would come nowhere close to filling the place up, but it would definitely be a lot louder.

IMO, if they can't take what they get. They don't deserve better, much less the whole gym.

So you're advocating that fans throw fruit at opposing teams when they visit Rupp? Wow.

Come on now, you are smarter than that. Do you honestly really think it would only be half packed for that event? At the lotteries which are just for tickets, the whole place is pretty much packed. So if you had an actual game there, I pretty sure it would be packed for that too, if it is packed just for tickets. Not to mention Memorial is not as big as Rupp so sitting at the top still is not that bad, and also if its just one game a year, it would be advertised around campus probably for a long time, and most people would want the chance to watch a piece of old history watching UK play in Memorial again. Most likely actually they will have to turn away some students from the event because it wouldn't be enough seats for everyone...

That kind of reasoning is the same used by bosses who decline raises to their employees, saying the employees should be kissing his feet just to have the job.

To amend earlier — the students wouldn't fill up Rupp, but I could see them doing so at Memorial with the proper buildup.

:thumb: I agree and that is what I said in my previous post. Plus I just think it would be awesome to see UK play a game a year there..

Rupp could potentially be the most intimidating place to play in the nation based on it's size and tradition.

Sadly, the crowd and the Erupption Zone are both pathetic, so it's no different for a team playing at EKU's gym, other than size of the place.

I agree with this 100%, if you truly had 24K going berzerk, it would be miserable to be a visiting team there.

Except the students aren't employees, and are complaining about a perk that is given to them for next to nothing...
