KHSAA Football Classifications

Featured Replies

One more season (2024) in the current alignment of classifications and districts. During 2024 the KHSAA will determine changes for the next 4-year cycle (2025 - 2028…. they went to the current 2- year cycle only because of the transition out of the COVID years).  Are there potential movements for some of the stronger programs- CAL up to 4A? Boyle up to 5A? Cov Cath up to 5A? FD down to 5A?

I had forgotten about this. There will be a shift in 2A districts in N. Ky. due to the new program at St. Henry coming online in 2025.

2A also has Web DuBois coming online in 2024. Based on their schedule, they will join the LCA district in 2024.

2A N. Ky. districts will be interesting. By current enrollment numbers, the largest school in 1A is Newport. The smallest school in 2A is Bracken County.

Boyle was already playing up from 3A numbers to 4A. They were very close and may have 4A enrollment now. Don't think they are going anywhere? I think you can only play up one class from your enrollment.

South Warren to 6A?

They had the numbers to be 6A this last realignment, but got to move down because of a team asking to move up. So a very good chance they will be 6A imo.

CovCath numbers were I believe right in the middle of 4A. So they most likely will be 4A still. Highlands was on the lower end of 5A, so could be interesting if their numbers drop them to 4A. Freddy D will never be a 5A team again with their enrollment. Boyle as mentioned if anything will barely have 4A numbers if that.

In NKY specifically as mentioned Newport is going to be interesting if they can stay in 1A. Then Cooper, Conner, and Dixie currently in 5A, if they still get to stay in 5A or move up. All 3 were near the top of 5A in enrollment. So it will be close for all 3.

Pretty sure there is no more playing up.  Unless I'm remembering that wrong.  I think they decided back in the spring to stop allowing that.

I think you are correct and I thought Boyle was firmly planted in the middle of 4A. I don't think they are likely to move up or down. Anybody able to easily confirm that?

Boyle County is right in the middle of 4A numbers. Definitely not playing up with 3A numbers.

In looking at the 22-23 enrollment reports, here's some potential big changes, depending on what next years enrollment looks like.

OB Catholic is trending as one of the smaller 2a enrollments, so, they could possibly move down.

Middlesboro is one of the largest 1a teams and could possibly move up.

Belfry, as they currently sit, would move from 3a to 2a.

Desales will likely move back to 3a in the next alignment.

CAL is one of the lower enrollment 3a teams and could move back to 2a.

SWarren will likely move up to 6a.

Cov Cath is one of the larger 4a enrollments and could possibly move back to 5a.

Cooper and D Heights are both on the 5a/6a border line.

The hard part of 1A and 6A is it depends so much on other schools. If a school jumps or drops in enrollment it can mess everything else up. The other 4 classes are just divided.

Also with the new alignment teams can't choose to play up correct?

I hope OC does move down to 1a. Pikeville needs some competition.

That is correct.

Great idea!
