I saw where Kayia Sherron entered the portal...does this mean with Wade and Sherron out that UK is without a back up qb for the Bowl game?

Also if this was basketball, Stoops would be getting ripped for Sherron not getting a shot as a KY kid.

This.   Still far too many kids entering the portal because they can, not necessarily because they should.  Eventually this will all self regulate and the appropriate number of kids will be in each year.  They need the wild west to set up cautionary tales.

Just heard this morning there is now a proposal for schools to be allowed to pay players. Half the athletes at the school get at least $30,000 and must be shared following title 9 rules. It is coming. This plus a new group of football schools splitting from the NCAA and governing themselves.

D1 schools can now easily go to the portal (without the transfer having to sit out a year) before offering an incoming Freshman. I don't know the stat off hand, but the amount of incoming Freshman was overwhelmingly larger than Seniors on scholarship and NFL prospects before NIL became a thing.  Now all I hear is how D1 schools are offering less and less High School Seniors. Just look at the beginning of this thread, every college kid who entered the portal is trying to find an NIL deal or go to a bigger school. If anyone is seeing or  hearing anything different, please let me know. I kinda hope I am wrong.

I am not sure I follow all of this but generally speaking it makes sense to me.  If I was a D1 college football program/coach I am looking to the portal first, always.  That doesn't mean I would cut back on any recruiting but if I have a digital menu of proven college football players I am always going there first, always. 

And, like we all knew was going to happen, it is all about the money now.  I still say college football players need a union but not a union with anyone corporate in charge.

I think Colleges HAVE to look at the portal first. They are getting someone with experience as a College Athlete from another school. I'm not referring to cutting back on the act of recruiting. I am specifically talking about the amount of D1 scholarships offered to HS Seniors. I think HS Seniors who want to play at the next level, AND especially those that think they have D1 ability, need to simply be aware how much the transfer portal has changed the landscape of Next level athletics.

You're good and I am the one jumping in, maybe without a full understanding. 

I think the Portal is an efficient way to sort through talent and for every action there is a reaction and that reaction is less bounty for high school seniors.

I would have to see actual numbers indicating that schools are offering significantly less freshmen because it's not sustainable.  If everyone did that for a few years, you'd run out of guys that could transfer.

Right, it closed system with a finite amount of positions so ultimately it would have to boil down to getting offers from different/lesser schools or the numbers don't add up and like you said, eventually would run out.

I don't have numbers but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn and while running  a simple Duck Duck search of "how is the transfer portal affecting high school seniors" 

The narrative back in 2021 was overwhelmingly sounding the alarm for HS seniors.

According to ESPN, 20.5 percent of FBS rosters in 2023 were made up of transfers. In 2019, that number was just 6.4 percent.

“What it trickles down to to the high school level has just been chaotic and crazy,” Morrissey said. “The college rosters are being filled and built up with transfer portal players instead of developing four-year players from the high school level.”

 

Does this increase the amount of Preferred Walk-On offers to high school seniors? Kind of like a tryout for a scolarship.

I've seen these interviews too.  Coaches are looking at the portal first for players and high school second.  Your 5 star high school players are still going to get recruited right out of high school, but colleges are now taking transfer players over 4 star and lower high school players.  They're recommending high school players to start looking at the JUCO route along with smaller colleges to get on the field early and prove themselves, and then transfer over to top tier college programs.

And as a parent that just navigated these waters with a child in another sport, the transfer portal has changed everything.  One week, "we want you, we're working on the offer to have in your hands next week." The next week, "we have a junior transfer coming in, so we no longer have the scholarship to offer."  The process is more brutal today than it was in the past.

As some have stated on here, the amount of scholarships and top level talent has not gone up or down, only the process of getting that talent on campus has changed.  

I think once the dust settles (The Covid redshirt has killed HS players more than anything) and the portal is realized...the numbers will even out and HS kids will be fine.  One thing that would help HS students is to drop the age requirement for the NFL to 20 years old.  Let those top level players go a year earlier than before.
