We need a Shot clock.

IBALL, you posed a question which obviously has lots of proponents on both sides of the question. It is kind of the same situation when the three pointer came about. Alot of times its more about change then what is actually being changed.

I certainly hope that all coaches don't want to win at all costs. At the high school level ,imo, we should be trying to teach these young athletes more about life lessons and less about wins and losses.

"Life is not about winning and losing, its about improving yourself inch by inch"-Bill Resler

There is a great movie coming out in late Feb. called " The Heart of The Game" The book written by the same coach is a must read for any coach! "The Heart of The Team".

When I said "win at all costs" I was referring strictly to playing strategy within the parameters of the rules of basketball. I was afraid this might be taken the wrong way, hence my comment in parentheses - "While hopefully playing fair and sportsmanlike". I, of course, believe that the best lessons learned from sports have nothing to do with the score.

I think you hit the nail on the head. People don't like change. When my mom played they wouldn't let the girls run from end to end. To hard on them. I remember when the three came out. People said there is no way girls can shoot from that far and be good at it. Remember when you couldn't dunk(heck I remember it well, still can't). Class system for basketball, everybody loves it for most other sports in Kentucky. Change, it's hard on people.

No need for the shotclock in HS ball, like stated above, not very often a team holds the ball for 45 seconds to begin with. Then add on the cost of the units, workers, just may not be feasable for all schools. Most stalling occurs at the end of each quarter, now if HS had 20 minute halves we may have a different story.

You are exactly right Boom, back when girls weren’t allowed to play full court, I bet there were those who said, “Just think how the shooting percentage will suffer if we let them play offense and defense.” Others probably said, “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.” It took so long to make these changes that the girl’s game suffered, while the boy’s game flourished.

So, our generation is at a crossroads of change. One group wants the girls game to continue to develop and improve, while another group wants things to stay the same.

Don’t be afraid. Embrace change.

Need or Want!!! The three point shot or the dunk weren't a change for need they were a change for want. If the post wanted a shot clock that is a coat of a different but I have yet to watch a Dean Smith high school team and be able to say we "need" a shot clock.

Great post IBall. I agree. Maybe let high school use it and make middle school not. That way the kids can transistion smoothly from one level to the next.

Well, there are many problems with having a shot clock in HS sports:

1) Cost. While it isn't all that expensive, there are costs associated such as an additional clock operator, mounting the clocks ect.

2) Officials. There are not too many officials at the HS level that would be able to make sure the clocks operated properly. Many of them barely watch the game clocks now. It takes an above average game manager-type official to be able to maintain effective game management during a game.

3) Rules. You would have to have the rule book add a section and also add all the situations that come from different plays that happen during a game. There are many of these and most HS officials just cannot handle the stress.

I put this mainly an officiating perspective, as I used to have to handle these situations. Believe me, it is a good thing that HS does not have one. Maybe someday, but it will take a year or two of implimentation and practice before it could even be adopted.

Excellent post IBALL, Crimedoc, and Ghost !

I really like the idea of having it for HS and not middle school!

Too expensive is one of many reasons. No shot clock in high school.(Just like there should be no 3pt basket before high school, or at least before 7th grade IMO. but thats for another thread.)

I agree 120% there should be no 3 point line in the younger age. To many kids try and shoot the three and they have to throw the shot up instead of shooting and this teaches poor shooting forms that are very hard to correct once kids have done this for so long I also think there should not be a shot clock there are alot of kids out there who would worry to much about the clock and i think you would see alot more free lace type plays instead of a set offense JMO i think teaching the kids to be patient and get a good look is important still at the High School level besides you cant tell me that once in awhile seeing a team that has no chance of winning slow the game down against a team so they can stay in the game and give themselves a chance for an upset is not a fun thing to watch afterall these are kids and they deserver to have fun when they are in High School gives them something to talk about when there old and grey LOL

High School games need a shot clock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The primary reason is that it rewards good defense. There is not a team that can play good solid defense for 1:00. If you have a shot clock there is more pressure on the coaches to teach teams quick hitters and understanding of the game. It's simply a much better game with a shot clock. I've coached under both circumstances and the shot clock adds to the game.

AAU uses a shot clock at all levels in tourney play. I think it's a 30sec. It works very well, no big expense and imo works very well. I think it speeds up the and increases the scoring.

That is true.

Hate it at high school level and hope it never happens. Most teams can't hold the ball that longwithout a turnover anyway.

Agreed, basketball isnt always made to be played in a hurry. Strategy wins a lot of games. Basketball isnt made for the fans to be happy or stay interested the entire game(eventhough that does help), but teams play to win. If ur team cant run with the ball or likes to work it around to get the open shot but just so happens to take longer than 45 secs, very seldom, then thats promotes good team ball instead of just the first one down the court pulls as soon as daylight hits the eye.

If i'm coaching and i think that if i hold the ball the entire quarter or as much as possible during the game will help me be closer to a victory then thats what i'm going to do, no matter if the fans like it or not, i'm there to win. people like winners and eventualy if it works the fans will adjust and everyone seems happy win winning is involved.
