After averaging an impressive 40 points per game in the first 6 weeks of the season, the Harrison County Thorobreds are undoubtedly still licking their wounds after Mason County found a way to completely stymie the run game of Harrison County's "Mr. Everything" quarterback Kaydon Custard last week, stuffing him with -32 yards rushing on 6 carries. That's a shocking stat line for Harrison County's all-time leading rusher, who had averaged 134 yards rushing in the six games this season prior to Friday night's performance. The Royals also intercepted Custard 4 times, doubling his total number of intercepted passes for the season. Even with four passes-turned-turnover, Harrison County's offense managed to pile up 222 yards and 2 touchdowns with their air assault, but it wasn't enough to stop Mason County after the Thorobred D gave up 451 yards and 6 touchdowns. Harrison County lost 40-13 and fell to 1-1 in the district and 4-3 on the season.

Covington Catholic had last Friday off and returns to action this week when they host Harrison County in Park Hills. The Colonels are still perfect this season at 7-0, and are 2-0 in 4A District 5 after handing the Grant County Braves a 56-6 loss on Sept 29th in Dry Ridge. Cov Cath played without starters Willie Rodriguez (ankle), Owen Leen (ankle), and Josh Flood (collar bone) in the Grant County game, and we will be waiting to see when Rodriguez and Leen return to action. We got to see a few interesting looks out of the Colonels' offensive backfield on the 29th, with several plays where both Cash Harney and Dylan Gaiser lined up in the backfield. Both are very competent quarterbacks with potent rushing attacks.

The Colonels are certainly the favorites heading into the game on Friday, but one interesting thing about the game, Harrison County still finds themselves in fairly rarefied air as one of only 14 opponents that has ever managed to stop a Covington Catholic playoff run. The Thorobreds brought Cov Cath's 1999 season to an end in the first round of the 3A playoffs when they beat the Colonels 21-16 in Cynthiana. I'd need someone more in the know to fill me in on whether or not he is related to Harrison County's present-day quarterback, but Billy Custard had the touchdown reception that sealed the deal for the Thorobreds' win over the Colonels back in November of 1999.

* Playoffs

Running clock. Excited to be back at home and have the CCH video broadcast for this one.

Had to settle on watching some old archived title games on NFHS to hold me over until this week. On an unrelated note, that 2017 team was so dominant and fun to watch (closest MOV was 21 and that was @ Kings). 2018 and 2019 were as well, but 2017 really had no challengers. 2018 should have been another title too.

Has to be the most lopsided district in the state.

Madden Curse with another obvious hater pick. LOL

Beechwood’s would give them a run for their money in that department.

So I'm not the only one who noticed that pick, huh? @MaddenCurse44, so what's your inside scoop that tells you the Thorobreds are gonna get the upset on Friday? Or is that pick made put of pure O.G. Cov Cath Hater coming out of you?

Any update on game status for Rodriguez, Leen, or Flood?  Flood’s injury I think was the most severe, so He could be done for the year?  And could this all also be a case resting them one more week because they can?

Not a hater just pulling for the upset.

You will see everyone this week minus Flood. I think the current thinking on Flood is that he may be back the second or third week of the playoffs.  Fingers crossed for him.

As always, solid update.  Yea, really hope He can get back.  As a Senior and an absolute beast, I Hope He can get back out there.

Seems like you would want CCH to win.  Wouldn't it help Simon Kenton's RPI?
