South Warren (4-1) at Greenwood (4-1)

BIG district and 5A matchup here as the Spartan take their road show into the SWAMP at Greenwood!

These 2 local rivals have played 11 times beginning in 2013 with the Spartans leading the series 9-2.  South Warren’s victories in this series have been pretty convincing, while the 2 Gator victories have been pretty memorable.  Greenwood won for the first time in 2016 with a 17-16 OT victory.  The other Gator win was last season as “Super-Gator” Lofton Howard powered Greenwood to a 35-21 win that earned the Gators the #2 district spot and sent the Spartans to the 3 seed and the road for the first round of the playoffs.

Both these teams have been ranked in the BGP 5A poll all season and both have big playoff aspirations so this game has big ramifications for district seeding.

Greenwood is led by QB Cam Smith who has 500 yards passing, 6 TDs vs 2 INTs through 4 games.

But the straw that stirs the drink for the Gators is Senior Tel Tel Long who is listed as RB, FB, WR and S.  He leads the Gators in rushing with 400 yards on 53 carries and 4 TDs and receiving with 8 catches for 150 yards and 2 more TDs.

The Spartans have had a banner start to the 2023 season.  Coach Brandon Smith has really brought this version of his team along really really well this season (IMO).  They have played a solid schedule that peaked last week on the road vs a strong 6A Manual team and although the Spartans fell 38-35, they overcame adversity throughout the game and kept coming back.

South Warren is led by star JR QB Bryce Button.  Button has over 1,200 yards passing with 14 TDs vs only 2 INTs.  His favorite target this year is SR Bailey Shoemaker who has 22 catches on the year with 460 yards and 5 TDs for Sparty.  South is led on defense by LB’s Jace Catrona and Colton Veltcamp, but the Spartan DLine has also played really well this season.

This is going to be an entertaining game!  Who do you got?

Had this one circled early on in the season as one to look forward to but when Greenwood got beaten down by OCath, I’ve since lost my interest. The Spartans can throw the ball very effectively and I see them putting up a similar showing that the Gators witnessed a couple weeks ago in their loss to the Aces.

I know a few people on here who would just go ahead and give the state championship to the winner of this game. Shoot, they'd probably go ahead and give the 6A state championship to them too if they could.

But I've watched both these teams play. I'd be surprised if South didn't win by a couple of scores. Go ahead and give them the #1 spot in 5A and 6A too.

Why 6A? They just got beat by Manual.

I totally agree. South Warren should move the ball at will through the air.

Should be a packed house, since the remodel has temporarily taken away the visitors seating.
GHS will for sure have to stop SW passing game, or it’ll be a long night. G has to find a way to get Elmo the ball more, and of course Tel Tel needs to make some plays. Gonna be a tall order for my Gators.

People tend to see the score of one game and judge a team for that whole season. I wouldn’t be surprised if this wasn’t a closer than expected game.

When you’re discussing matchups that’s what tends to happen. Can’t travel to Owensboro and let up 276 through the air and 5 TD’s and the game be over by halftime and expect for anyone to have faith that they’ll stop a SW air raid that is producing a top 5 passing leader in the state.
