I like the idea of free transfer for freshman year. I think freshman year you can figure out if you like the school or not. If you stick around to sophomore year, you pretty much made decision you want to stay there and regular transfer rules with exceptions should apply if decide want to transfer. You can transfer all you want for academics so this is often a sports related decision such as where you are on the depth chart.

I like the one free transfer idea.  I think it would eliminate 90% or more of the hoopla and work surrounding this issue and the bottom line is high school is about children, not arbitrary and subjective "adult" rules.

It seems like having a free transfer is basically just allowing what they’re already allowing. There were transfers this year that  per their own  rules probably shouldn’t have been eligible so if they’re going to allow it might as well allow it officially for everyone not just those who can afford good lawyers.

I like this idea for one main reason. I have heard that coaches calling up freshmen and playing them for 2 snaps to “lock them in” is an actual thing. Disgusting, but apparently a practice that some employ. I would like to see that not be a factor in where a player ultimately ends up his sophomore year.

I have shared this before.  I remember my high school football coach, Bernie Barre, having a discussion with the team before one game where everyone figured to get in and he told us all that if anyone is thinking about transferring (not that it happened much back then but still) to let him know because if he put them in the game they would be ineligible the next year.  In other words, Coach Barre was proactive on this issue and he put his players first.

I think you can look at it a couple different ways. I know if Glasgow is up big Coach Garmon gets everyone in the game and it ain’t got nothing to do with this it’s just trying to reward the younger guys for practicing hard everyday with some varsity playing time. I’m

How does this stop people appealing a future KHSAA decision when they want to transfer again, though?  Don't see how this solves any problems.

I’m talking about something entirely different. Calling up Frosh who don’t practice with or play varsity, for the sole purpose of hindering their ability to transfer.

It doesn’t in any way, shape, or form.

You are telling me that when Junior Samples doesn’t get to play much his Sophomore year and Daddy has the dollars for a lawyer, the KHSAA is going to stand their ground?

Not a chance!

Transfer will be denied.

Daddy will hire Lawyer.

Transfer/Eligibility approved.

Same as it ever was.

The one amendment I would make to this proposal is that if a player does transfer he is ineligible for the postseason the year of the transfer. You can play every regular season game in every sport, but for the first year you are out when it matters. May not cut down on the amount of transfers, but it at least tries to prevent the Wild Wild West from happening. Also makes a coach think twice when a player enrolls at their school.

Yuck.

No thanks. At that point why would a coach even play them, since they wouldn’t be able to use them for the post season. Coaches would most likely stop playing that player then, because they need to get their team ready for the post season without them. No thanks.

One free transfer seems fair to me, and no stipulations with it. They are allowed to play regular season and post season.
