KHSAA Board of Control meeting (9/13/23)

The KHSAA could stop the transfer problem immediately if they wanted to by changing one word in their bylaws from “may” to “shall” be ineligible for one calendar year. But they won’t do that because they would loose control of doing favors to certain schools. That would be the fair way to make sure everyone gets the same treatment that may suck for some kids but that would do it. The second option is just let anybody go wherever they want whenever they want and completely do away with the transfer rules all together.

I’m talking about something entirely different. Calling up Frosh who don’t practice with or play varsity, for the sole purpose of hindering their ability to transfer.

I guess that’s big school problems because at the small public schools everyone practices with the varsity. But this is never going to change because if kids don’t just get immediate playing time then them and their parents say well we will just send them somewhere else or if a kid is really good then they will just transfer to one of the so called power programs and that’s why you see the same schools in the championships every year. It ain’t like the old days these are no longer community schools they are built just to win football games just like in college.

I like the idea of free transfer for freshman year. I think freshman year you can figure out if you like the school or not. If you stick around to sophomore year, you pretty much made decision you want to stay there and regular transfer rules with exceptions should apply if decide want to transfer. You can transfer all you want for academics so this is often a sports related decision such as where you are on the depth chart.

I agree. We had 3-4 or students transfer after our freshman school year because their friends went to various public schools. None were athletes and seemingly it was a non-issue.

We are going through the appeals process right now with my son for soccer. The season is half over and we just had a hearing. We were told everything was being denied and those willing to appeal would get a hearing. With 500 transfers so far this year I understand why it's taking so long. But, there has to be a better process.

My frustration is how some schools get top athletes transferring in every season for football and basketball and it doesn't raise a flag at all. But a sophomore soccer player gets flagged.

It's no good for the kids.

Sounds like a case of "If you can't beat em, join em."

I'm fine with no transfer rules. However, there must be a dealine like Aug. 1. No transfers are allowed after this date especially not during the season.
