HS Football in Boone County

Featured Replies

On our podcast this week, we asked Coach Engler....

"The Split up of High Schools in Boone County. Was that good for kids? Was that good for KY HS Football?"

Coach Engler had a good answer. Be sure to listen.... Thursday, 9/7, 7:30 pm

Would be curious to hear @theguru's answer to these two questions. There is a great northern KY football following on BGPreps. Would love to see what those fans think as well... especially the old timers!

Well... BCHS has the best coach they are ever going to get now or anytime in the next 25 years.  No one cares more about the school, those kids and the history of BCHS football more than Bryson Warner

  • I don't think so either. And even if it was, people would still be trying to avoid sending their kids there even if their kids were flagged as needing to go there.  The thing that needs to be kep

  • That makes me respect you even more if that is possible.

I would have expanded Ryle and Conner, made Boone County a special education school, never built Cooper, and I would allow anyone to go to any Boone County high school.

Our middle school team who is not on an up year for us... Played up there vs Boone County. We almost killed the teams.. The parents were yelling to check our kids birth certificates, and that we needed flagged for cheap shots... we do not even have a big team!  I was how far football in that area has fell off in the last 20  years.

Curious what your reasoning is for allowing them to attend whichever school they’d choose. And why are there so many middle schools?  Why not have one for each high school, and district borders for those schools. Like almost everywhere else in NKY.  Boone county seems messy to me, as an outsider. Simon Kenton and Scott a little bit too.

Funny... and Ryle and Cooper would smoke you this year and usually every year.  No one cares about Middle School Football up here.  We care about high school football.  As long as the kids are playing in middle school that's all that matters.  The Boone County middle school teams are technically "club" teams.  They are not affiliated with any specific middle school.  You play for the high school they are supposed to feed into and even then the amount of kids who will play for a feeder and then go to a different high school is pretty common.  Ryle and Cooper and even Conner have had multiple D1 kids and great teams the last 20 years.  The only team that has fallen off is the actual Boone County High School and that is whole other can of worms.

Guru is right.  Four High Schools is way too many for football dominance.  Only two Boone County High Schools would create two LEGIT 6a contenders every year.  Facts.  The districting hasn't worked because everyone tries to avoid Boone which is sad, but now they can't go "open enrollment" either because no one would go to Boone.  So you are correct that its a Mess !!!

Everyone should have school choice period.

Probably a chance that by the next reclassification period Ryle, Cooper, and Conner are 6A?? You are forgetting Walton....2A and could eventually become 3A with more building. Could Boone ever drop to 4A??

That picture of Shaun Alexander and Coach Owen Hauck brought back some great memories. Had the pleasure of doing many Boone games over the years. Had the Boone/Cov Cath season opener several times. One year had that game at 8 at Boone, Highlands/Male the next afternoon at Beechwood...... doesn't get much better than that in 24 hours!!

How would everyone rank the teams in Boone County?  I will go with:

1. Ryle

2. Cooper

3. Conner

4. Walton-Verona

5. Boone County

I brought this up a few years back to some people and all anyone could care about was other sports. Saying it wouldn’t be right for all those other kids who aren’t good enough to make an “allstar team”. As I told them then and stand by it today, if you aren’t good enough then get better.

Boone County has too much talent spread between 3 schools it’s ridiculous. I say 3 because Boone isn’t much in any sport anymore because those kids leave for Lloyd.

I think you can use this order for all sports in the county. In that order.

I second this train of thought.

Not every sport.  Ryle men's basketball has struggled mightily.  Cooper girls hoops are also on a run.  The other sports on the list are probably accurate though mainly because of Ryle's huge numbers advantage.

Ain’t that pretty much already happening.
