Armed With Warrior Spirit, Southwestern Crosses New Frontier To Battle Pioneers

Records: Southwestern (2-0) | Simon Kenton (2-0)

BGP Ranking: Southwestern (#5 in 5A) | Simon Kenton (unranked in 6A at the time of this post)

Series History: Southwestern leads 1-0 all-time

Table Setter: Matching 2-0 starts and SK's compelling win over Highlands have placed this game under a more focused microscope. The Pioneers blew out Oldham County to open the season, but needed a win over the Bluebirds to make waves in the waters of 6A and NKY. Mission accomplished. Simon Kenton ran right at Highlands, accruing 353 rushing yards in the 42-40 nail biter. The trident of Chase Crone, Kaleb Bleier, and Chase Williams accounted for 332 of that total.

Southwestern took a more balanced approach in hanging 59 points on West Jessamine in Week 2. The right arm of Collin Burton and the legs of Tanner Wright combined for nearly 400 yards of offense and two touchdowns apiece.

If there's anything to be discouraged about for SK after the win over the Birds, it's that the defense at times resembled last year's ramshackle unit. Another performance like that might earn them a second straight humbling defeat to the Warriors, who dropped 62 points on SK last year, a season worst for points allowed. Tanner Wright churned out 165 yards that night on 12 per carry to lead a Southwestern running game that collectively averaged 11 yards a pop. This will be a solid measuring stick for how far SK's defense has come.

Simon Kenton has their chance to prove they are 6A top ten. The Highlands win helped their cause towards that but this game will tell the tale for now. Good luck to the Pioneers. I would enjoy seeing them get the win and come into the Beechwood game the next week undefeated and in the 6A top ten.

SK is good against the run with the three 290 pound plus DT rotation.

Didn't they give up 200 yards and 4 touchdowns on 29 carries against Highlands?

I watched the game against Southwestern last season.  If Simon Kenton isn't vastly improved on defense, they won't hold the Warriors below 40 points.  I'll take Southwestern over Simon Kenton 42-28.
