I would assume a lot but I don't have anything to add to the thread other than choose a situation best for you.

Sign up with the coaching Listserv through KHSAA/UK linked below. There are regular posts from head coaches looking for assistants and quite often include available teaching positions as well. Really good resource.

Pretty much every school is. Now if there is a paid spot and/or a teaching spot is a different story. Grant Co is always looking for some.

I'm not sure there are many schools that wouldn't take a good assistant.

Just curious, how do public schools pay assistant coaches? I’m sure it depends on school district, school, and area. But are most assistant coach “salaries” or stipends depending on what the head coach offers them, if they coordinate or have other responsibilities, or does that come from the athletic department or above?

But In general, If Coach John Smith coaches at ABC County High School and coaches Wide Receivers and doesn’t teach, can he make $5k while Coach Richard Smith doesn’t teach and is the offensive coordinator make $10k? Do non coordinating assistant coaches all make the same at ABC County High School, or does one coach make more than the other assistant coach because Head Coach made a promise to one for a certain number and the budget allowed it at the time.

Most assistant and HC positions are set salaries per extra duty salary schedule in public schools. If "negotiations" or "incentives" beyond those salaries are given that's something else. Private schools usually have a salary schedule for extra duty, but have more "flexibility".

Ummm Everybody.

What geographic area you in?

That right there is one big limiting factor. People aren’t going into education or coaching like they use to so that hurts. Then unless you work/live in a pretty decent populated area good luck getting someone to drive out to coach. There aren’t a ton of assistants making decent money.

Then there is the time required. You’re family better be real understanding about that “second job” or “hobby” because it’s going to add at least 20 hours of time.

A question that could be added is, if you had to list say top 5, where would the best assistant coaching jobs be?

Tough call. What makes a job top 5 to you? Winning? A coach that let's coaches coach? Salary? A lot would go into that, but it would be a blast to debate.

20 isn't close.  In my opinion.

I figure it at at least 30, and that doesn't factor into commute time.

Practice window will be at least 3 hours 4x a week-- 12 hours total

Game day is at least 4 hours of time there-- 16 total

Saturday game film and watching/coaching a JV game is at least 4 hours-- 20 total

A solid coach is going to put at least 10 hours in film/scouting report through the week-- 30 total

It's honestly going to be more than that.

20 was based off of Monday through Friday and in my example I was referring to parapros. Not many jobs allow you to dedicate a large amount of time to be an assistant coach like teaching. That’s also why I said “at least”.  There are a number of programs that have moved away from meeting on the weekends and work from home. I’m not counting sitting at home on Hudl in the time total.

Not all assistants are equal either. Some assistants aren’t in charge of a position group. Some have no real game planning or practice planning responsibilities.
