As far as D1 players being the criteria for picking a top 5 I think we would all agree just because you can play hoops doesn't mean academically you can qualify for any college

The top 5 player everyone will question is Robinson. He only averaged about 14 points per game but he would always have double digit rebounds, lead the team in assists, and have a bunch of steals.

Gosh, I would have to put Rodrick Robinson in the top 15. He everything so well but was overshadowed by Miller's big scoring numbers. He had a very good career at LMU with Sanford and Buell.

No way Boo is a first team player. You have two people on HDE's list on the second team that was 1st team all state players in Jones and Lester.

Maybe it would be a more rational argument and settle the IQ debate if you listed all the Russell players who have made first team all state and received

a d-1 scholarship. Seems like that criteria would eliminate most of the "personal" opinion

I don't believe that because one is going to play D1 that automatically means that they are better than someone who did not play D1. I would humbly submit that Dennis Rodman and Walter Payton did not play D1 and I would take them over Walter Berry ( who was NCAA player of the year ) and Archie Griffin ( who won two Heisman Trophies ). And as far as all state goes there are several all state teams, some that said player made and some that he did not. You obviously have personal reasons for how you feel, mine are non-biased like I said so I am very comfortable with my reasons for the picks I made and I feel that I would not replace any of my picks with Vanhoose, Hensley or Howell because they were not as good as the players I picked. Nothing personal.

I think the fact Vanhoose and Hensley led their TEAM to the Sweet Sixteen is a huge feather in their caps.

Your proving my point, which was a players overall ability is best determined by paid professionals who make a living off of evaluating talent for their teams

and get fired if they don't pick the right kids. d-1 isn't the overiding factor, although a big one, but there are a lot of great players who couldnt cut it academically or had other issues. Bottom line, your example of Rodman and Payton is true, but their abilities were "validated" by someone who got paid to make those decisions and they got college scholarships and played professionally. I'm not that familiar with the players on your list, but did they play anywhere after High school? I'm sure none of them played professionally or I would have known that, but just curious as to what they did with basketball after high school?

Rick Hensley played at TCU and was a key player that beat the #1 team in the state in the finals of the regional in 1972. If I was making a list for Russell, I would have to have him on it

Also forgot Steve Chambers![/QUOte] We could mention a lot of boys from Maysville High as being pretty good but how many were good enough to get a scholarship offer to play for a division 1 school. The ones that big bopper mentioned and a few more. College coaches are a pretty good judge of talent.:ylsuper:

I would switch Verax for Elliot. Verax is having a nice career at Transylvania and Elliot is at Berea.

I never got to watch Mike Fessler play (he was in '62), but he put up 50 points against Dixie Heights and had the highest scoring average for an individual season with 25.4. It's difficult to leave a guy like that off the list.

 

Other than that, I'd take Corey Grace ('97?). He was a beast and ended up playing for Thomas More. He went down to Kentucky to attempt to walk-on, but they told him that there were no more spots on the roster. Somebody by the name of Saul Smith took the last one.

 

It's difficult to leave Andy & Kevin Listerman off the list, but I think there are much more talented players. I'd probably take Nestheide ('04) & Purdon ('01)over them, but that's just my opinion.

 

Also, Dan Tieman deserves a spot. Anybody who plays behind the Big O has a legit reason for riding the pine.
