This is rich, a Michigan fan lecturing about "choking away national title hopes". The best thing that happened to OSU this year is that while they continued to beat UM, Coach Carr managed to keep his job. Buckeyes everywhere breathed a sigh of relief.

If your the Athletic Director of a University, wouldn't part of your job description be to get your schools football team into a bowl game? You act like it is a bad thing that UK thought ahead and gave theirself a favorable schedule to become bowl eligible. That's the goal, right? UK did exactly what they needed to do this season, and that is go to a bowl game. How can you blame them for doing their best to make it possible. Truth is, they did every thing they needed to do, but still had a strength of schedule in the top 10 this year. So what is there to complain about....Not much if your a UK fan

And this is the problem I have with the bowl system(among many). It promotes a nasty cycle of weak schedules. I personally don't like it because:

 

A. We don't get to see great matchups in the regular season

B. Some team goes undefeated against a bunch of patsies and then whines about a shot at the championship

C. You get overinflated numbers, like how strong the SEC is, based on in large fashion, the wins against 1AA and cupcake 1A schools. (Just using the SEC as an example, there are many other conferences as well)

D. It promotes good teams to schedule weak teams OOC so that they don't take a dreaded L and get knocked out of the championship or BCS games.

E. It promotes average/bad teams to schedule weak teams OOC so that they can win enough games to get into a bowl, because they sure aren't going to win them in their conference(UK is a prime example).

 

I agree, if I was AD, I'd want that money and do everything in my power to schedule weak teams so that I could go at least .500. But is that really what college athletics should be about? Ducking quality teams? I'm not blaming UK, they did what they could to make a buck. Money makes the world go round I suppose................

I completely agree with you, about the BCS system. It's flawed to the max. But you can't blame people for being smart enough to take advantage of it. LSURock makes it out to be a sin. However UK would have only needed to win 2 games OOC this season to get bowl eligible, not to mention they had a top10 schedule overall anyway. So you can't really throw them in the 'weak schedule' catagory just yet.

It would be nice for the UofL UK game to mean something nationally.

1. When Jerry Claiborn was hired he was going to bring Kentucky back to national prominence.
   
2. When Bill Curry was hired he was going to mirror the success he had at GaTech and Bama.
   
3. After Hal Mumme won some games with smoke and mirrors UK re-named a street after him only to wath that "program" crash and burn.
   
4. In Guy Morriss you had a coach in place who won with what was there and yet your AD let him get away.
   
5. In Rich Brooks you have an overall loser who was living in retirement from coaching because no one wanted him. He dumbed down the schedule to get bowl eligible and beat an uninspired team in a death spiral in that bowl game.
   

 

Accept that the curse of the Bear is still in full effect and that one of the things it does is give you a decent (I won't say good based on the quality of wins that UK had) season every once in a while only to watch you have your hopes shattered.

I think that UK is in the right direction...but All Tell did not lie about anything in his post.

The point of the original post was nothing more than sharing excitement about the possibility of having two great teams in our state. No where did anyone say that UK was on the verge of being a national power. Winning a decent bowl after an upswing year is one of the many first steps to building a good program. Bash that all that you want, but they aren't just going to wake up one year and be national powers, they start with seasons like this. And what do you want their fans to do? Boo and curse their team until they are national contenders every year? Of course, unless you are a fan of a team like Michigan you have no right to discuss football, winning, or bowl games.

See point C in my previous post. When all the teams in your conference play weak OOC schedules, what is everyone going to have? 3-4 more wins right? What do you think that does for the "schedule strength"? I don't blame UK at all for taking advantage of the system, just like I don't necessarily blame Urban Meyer for whining and politicking for votes to get in the national title game. But I don't like it, and I don't feel it is what college athletics should represent.

 

And you HAVE to throw UK in the weak schedule category. Because while yes their conference schedule(and the SEC's overinflated strength) boosted UK's overall schedule, what is the common theme in most of those games that did the boosting? That's right, a UK loss. I'd like to see how the schedule stacks up concerning only the teams they beat. The sad part is, UK was one play here or there from going 5-8. But that is the mark of a team on the rise, as UK in the past would have dropped those games. But let's not build them into something they have no hope of achieving.

I think its funny how UL fans are looking down their noses at the UK program. I really don't recall UL having much of a program except for the past couple of years. UL is no more a national power than UK. The success of the Petrino era is nice but is not anything more than that. When he leaves (and he will) UL very well may find its program where it usually is. Decent nothing special. I do not pull for any specific college football program, but I pretty much can name the big-time national programs and neither UK or UL would be on that list. So UL fans, why not let the UK fans enjoy there bit of success, just as you have.
