This explains a lot.

As for the snow, seems like they under sold NKY and it ended up getting a decent amount.  Just to be clear, here in NKY, we mean Boone, Kenton and Campbell.  ?

Grant County's main roads were uncharacteristically sloppy this morning. I'm wondering if sportsfan is on to something with the accumulation being undersold, and as a result, less pre-treatment was done.

The city of Florence did a great job clearing all of our local roads.  I watched them clear my street about 11pm last night and they took a lot of care to do it right.

Side roads were a little slushy here this morning, but the interstates were just a little wet. They always do a great job here.

This is the first time I can recall that maybe we were underprepared here. Everyone knows how us hillbillies love to throw a blade and salt bin on a truck and adventure out into the night. I don't feel as we lived up to our reputation last night.

Fortunately I haven't seen or heard of any accidents, not that I actively look for them, so that's good, but I'm glad to hear everyone was able to commute elsewhere.

Maybe it is just me but the forecasts for snow over the last few years where I live almost always seem to overstate the actual snowfall.  After awhile (not you here nWo) the "meteorologists that cry wolf" get ignored and then you end up with what we had this time around.

Honestly, Grant County's county-maintained roads are usually much, much worse than any maintained by the state or cities.  I don't know if it's been a change in operations or a cutback in the budget, but something has changed over the past several years.

In the present/past it has been the opposite in Boone County.  Normally the city maintained roads are cleared like a homeowner would clear his/her own property but the county/state roads lag behind and sometimes only get attention hours after the fact.

I live in the southern portion of Boone County and take a road into Grant County on my way to work.  Can't tell you the number of times (including today), where when I pull onto the Boone County maintained portion, it's plowed and salted...then I get to the Grant County maintained portion, where I'm lucky if it's even been plowed...and then get into Crittenden where the road gets turned over to the state contractors, and once again it's plowed and salted.  I often go from just wet conditions, to fully snow covered, and back to just wet conditions...all on the same road.

In my 20 years living where we're at right now, the county has been unbelievable in getting snow plowed on our street...which is a dead end street at one of the furthest points south in the county.  And it's never an after-the-fact type, either.  They're usually pretty on top of it from our vantage point.  Can't complain about them one bit.

I think I figured out why some of the roads weren't cleared.

From Cincinnati.com:

A City of Cincinnati salt truck led police on a slow-speed chase, dumping its load on police cruisers in pursuit.

Officers were making an unrelated arrest and the salt truck driver came up on them (fast according to the officers) flinging salt onto the officers and the man being taken into custody. Additionally the salt truck driver raised the bed of his truck, dumping salt on police cruisers in pursuit.

You can't make this stuff up.

That was a bit of a career limiting move.
