Beechwood 48 Covington Holy Cross 6

Summary of game.  For full stats and play-by-play, see below:

QB Cameron Hergott threw for 4 touchdowns to 4 different receivers (passing for 199 yards) and RB Avery Courtney scored 2 touchdowns on the ground (rushing for 88 yards) to lead Beechwood to a 48-6 victory over Covington Holy Cross.  Holy Cross had another tough night offensively.  WR Brandon McClendon returned to action and took the opening kickoff to the house only to have the TD nullified by an illegal blocking penalty.  He repeated the effort in the 2nd quarter by going 94 yards for a TD on another kickoff return (that one counted).

Covington Holy Cross (1-4) travels to Newport (3-2) next Friday night while Beechwood (3-2) stays home to take on Lloyd (2-1).

Brandon McClendon has probably had 20+ career returns for TDs that I know of personally pulled back because of penalties and lack of discipline By teammates. Kid is a beast. It’s really a shame for him. Keep grinding young man.

Hergott looked scary good tonight. Has improved every week. BW pulled out a lot of plays I haven’t seen them run this year until tonight. Hope they continue to expand the playbook, because if Hergott plays the way he did tonight, the tigers will be in great shape come playoff time.

Didn't he get a person foul on his own runback?  Of course it didn't call back the score but agree there is a general lack of discipline that keeps coming back to haunt the team.

I understand what the official called, but IMO, that was a bit ticky-tacky.  McClendon raised his index finger on his right hand about two yards from the goal line.  It was definitely not taunting because he was looking ahead.

Nice try. It was definitely taunting.

Nice try.  It wasn't.  I was there looking at it.  I'm not disagreeing with the other fouls during the game, nor am I going to try to address a general issue with the team's discipline.  I'm only referring to that play.  We see players raise an index finger all the time at all levels of the game - sometimes, with bad results if they are caught from behind or if the ball is stripped away before the player crosses the goal line.  I would personally coach players not to do it for that reason.  I understand that officials are probably going to call that as an unsportsmanlike conduct every time now, but I say let them play.  The officials were very confused Friday night and lost control of the game early.

It's high school, not the NFL. The rules are very different. They may not call that every time in high school, but I have seen it called many times - and I have seen less than that called unsportsmanlike. When you look back at the player chasing you and wag your finger at him in a high school game, don't be surprised if they call it unsportsmanlike.

After watching their head coach pick up a football that got away from the other team and punt it towards the stands during warmups a few years back, I'm not shocked that Holy Cross suffers from a lack of discipline.

He didn’t even look back, but they was doomed from the start with refs! The first kickoff was a great block on 2 guys and they threw a flag!

Lot of apologists in this thread. Only comment I have is that was as clear a taunting as you'll see. Action, location, event...all point to taunting. WITH THAT SAID, I do agree the officials needs to be more consistent bc there are some wildly different ideas of what a lot of penalties - especially taunting - are in the area. I get it's not easy and I applaud those guys for what they do - and the abuse they take - but they need to be more consistent with the obvious stuff.

Any Holy Cross focused comments on this thread need to be on what a FANTASTIC football player Brandon McClendon is. Winner through and through. Taunting or not, he played a great game in a climate where it's not easy to do so.

Kudos also to freshman tailback Levarr Jones! He was fun to watch and played his heart out. Also, whoever the center and right guard are seemed to have nice games as well when Jones was running well.

Final score was 48 to 6. I don't think the most lopsided refs in the world can create that wide a margin.

Agree with that.  Beechwood was clearly the stronger team.  Complaint was with how the refs behaved and managed the game.  One odd example was a line judge throwing a flag about 25-30 yards into a crowd of players of both teams (didn't seem like a safe thing to do at the time).  IMO, as I mentioned previously, they did seemed confused on many instances.  Did not impact the final result since game was not close.

The 1990 playoff refs at Bell County would beg to differ..
