Big 10 Cancels Football Season

Just because the Big Ten cancels their season doesn’t mean the other conferences have to do the same...

There is zero doubt in my mind that players are safer inside their “bubble” if they are playing rather than not playing. Not to mention if you cancel or move the season, you’d better allow those players to transfer and play immediately.

Then how can university administrators justify bring 20,000 to 30,000 students back on campus in a much less restrictive environment?

It's obviously not 100% perfect, but over the summer when players do what their coaches and medical staff tell them to do there tends to be a significant drop in cases. Not the same, but the NBA, WNBA, and the NHL have shown if you follow directions then their "bubble" works. The MLB has shown when players do what ever they want it doesn't work. But at the end of the day each professional league has bargaining power; college athletes not so much.

There is no way to justify it.

Cancelling college football wouldn't be about protecting the players, it would be about protecting the leagues and the NCAA from liability.

There are 2 reasons. Liability like you mentioned and because the NCAA is scratching and clawing to do everything they can to preserve the idea that these guys are amateurs. The solution is so simple to this. If the players could unionize, the demands would be simple. A uniform set of safety protocols, health insurance for the 10 years upon graduation, increased monthly stipends for hazard pay, and a share of the revenue from the conference. Included in that would absolve the universities from liability and the players would be adequately compensated. It took the players roughly 2 hours to put that together on Twitter last night. The NCAA just won’t come to the table. They will cancel the season to preserve the illusion of Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields being amateurs.

The players making demands is only going to hurt their case to play. They'll never win that battle. Just say you want to play and focus your "unionizing" for another time. Pandemic or not, they'll never win that way.

They are providing the solution to play, by absolving the universities from liability.

Agreed. That’s the solution though. Anything to uphold the illusion of amateurism.

Fields and Lawrence got on a zoom call last night to figure out a plan to fight the cancellation.   Two guys who don’t even need to play but want to play.

I see the end result of this pay the players debate being the Power 5 conferences going on their own breaking away from the NCAA. 

The schools outside the Power 5 just can't function in a pay the player world.

I don't think that is the main reason, no. 

Do I think now that players are throwing out demands that some in power think that? Probably.
