I like your thinking. It's been, what, 15 years since they moved to the 8th? I remember that the talk was they were going to waltz to Rupp each year. This has been a big old fashioned dose of karma.

 

I can tell you that's not or never been the sentiment most SK fans have held. With that being said I would have expectedcat least one runbto Rupp since we were cast away from the 9th.

Not trying to be disrespectful but teams that rely so much on one player generally don't go very far in tournaments. You asked if they could reach the sweet sixteen. There are too many good teams above them. Just because you knock off a contender in one game doesn't mean much. They did lose to Grant County the night before. I truly believe that Simon Kenton has almost no chance of winning the 8th region. Great win against Collins though. Niece had to get 39 to upset Collins. He would probably need to do that three games in a row. Not going to happen.

 

They lost by 5 to Collins previously. From what I. was told Niece barely played the final two quarters. They have three averaging 15 plus points.

Like Oldham Co in this region. I predict they will win the region. Will all depend on match ups.

I do find it amazing that SK hasn't been to state since they switched over to the 8th. I for one think they had 5 or 6 years where they may have had the most talent in the 8th. SK is the largest school in the 8th and the closes one is Oldham County and they have nearly 200 less students. But I guess you could argue the same thing with Ryle in the 9th.

2006 and 2007 were probably the Pioneers' best shots at winning the 8th - the first two years they were in the region. (though they certainly weren't the only years that they have had really good, competitive teams). They just had the misfortune that 2006 was the year Shelby County went 31-4 and had a beast team, and Oldham County had a monster team in 2007. Both years, SK finished as region 8 runner-up.

For basketball, when there are that many schools with over 1,000 students, I think enrollment is a non issue relative to chances of winning a region.

Agree. Basically half your region is a large school.

You are 100% correct, at least, in regards to those larger schools.

 

Shelby County, with 1,000 students, really has pretty much the same opportunity to get the caliber of athletes that SK does.

Enrollment may not be everything, but when you look at recent 8th region champions you see a lot of the larger schools consistently in the mix (Oldham, South Oldham, Collins) with the exception of SK.

 

A school as small as 100 can put five good players on the court at any given time. However, enrollment & the depth that often comes with it becomes an advantage over the course of the year when dealing with injuries and practices. The quality of the second team at practices can't be overlooked. Take Spencer County as an example, they have "four guys who can score 25 on any given night" and "four guys who will play in college," but I guaranty the quality of their second team that they face in practice each day is nowhere near the caliber that South Oldham's or Oldham County's starting five face in their second team. That's an advantage in trying to simulate game situations and prepare for tough opponents.

 

Any school with 200 or 300 extra boys has an advantage, and has probably benefited from a feeder system in which multiple schools feed into a high school. That keeps more kids playing through middle school who often develop at different stages. All things equal, I'll take a larger school's chances over a smaller school any day.
