Anyone use WAZE when travelling?

 

Other than draining my phones battery quickly if not on the charger, I really like it.

 

For those unfamiliar with it, it's a GPS direction app. The big difference is that it's interactive. If a car ahead of you sees a wreck, a car stopped on the shoulder or even the police running radar, they just tap a couple of buttons on their phone. Then everyone following them gets a heads up about 30 seconds to a minute before getting to it. The first time I used it was on a trip to Arkansas, it probably saved me two or three times from getting a ticket, as troopers in Arkansas like to hide. WAZE gave me a heads up and I could slow down each time before passing the trooper.

 

Driving I-75 back and forth to Lexington it has been nearly 100% on IDing hazards or PoPos.

Use it all the time and you’re right you better have it on a charger.

We use it for long road trips. It is a battery sucker.

On a trip to Florida one time for Fall Break a friend of ours was over an hour in front of us. We beat them by an hour down there. Waze has us reroute around wrecks and traffic jams due to construction a few times. Saved us a ton of time.

I do know of a trooper that would report his location at several different spots aling a road. Then when people got to thinking they were all false alerts and sped back up, he'd be sitting there running RADAR.

Yeah I've heard from a couple cops and they hate Waze. :lol2:

Isn't the maps that GoogleMaps uses on their phone app from Waze?

Waze was great a few years ago when we went to Chicago. When we were still an hour or so away, it all of a sudden had us get off the interstate. I told my wife, we aren't there yet, so I don't know what's going on. But, we followed its instructions. Ten minutes later we're on a different road driving parallel to the interstate, and we look over to see it's a bumper to bumper parking lot. HUGE time saver that day!

 

However, it is not without it's faults. A couple of years ago we were in Michigan, going to see the Sleeping Bear Dunes just west of Traverse City. We trusted it's directions completely, and ended up going down a lane that dead-ended at a farmer's house. Turns out we were miles away from where we wanted to go. So, how or why it sent us there...I'm still not sure.

I never drive anywhere without it. My daily commute is 40 minutes and I keep my phone plugged in the whole time. When I get to my destination, my battery has more charge than it did when I left.

 

When the eclipse occurred, I traveled to Kentucky Dam Village to see totality. On the way back, it rerouted us and was a total lifesaver. I’m talking HOURS shaved off our trip, as others I know got stuck in the traffic.

That was my question too. I use Google maps for traffic and directions. Is that different than waze?

I use Waze all the time, but I haven't figured out how to communicate with it hands-free to report stuff.

Google owns both Waze and Google Maps. Google keeps moving Waze features over to Google Maps to make them more and more alike. The biggest advantage with Waze is privacy. On Google Maps Google collects data about you. That doesn't happen on Waze. Ads are also handled differently on Google Maps and are less invasive on Waze.

I think Waze does a better job of rerouting than the google maps.

 

When it first came out I ran them simultaneously for a while. Waze rerouted more often to avoid things.
