I haven't the slightest clue about BW offense or defense. In years past they have used tight ends and fullbacks, like to run, sprinkle in the bootleg quite a bit. It sounds like thats still their recipe. If it is, they will need to make the most of their scoring opportunities. Madisonville game showed everyone how to beat Mayfield. Control the clock, move the chains, and (obviously) score every time you have the ball (and that still didn't beat the Cards). I think a shootout would put BW at a disadvantage.

 

As previously state, I think the Cards just need to play their game. Run enough to keep the defense honest, and let Stinson sling that rock all over the field. Its a rare luxury to have a QB like him that can put the ball anywhere.

 

I was critical of Mayfield defense and tackling most of the season, but they have made big strides down the stretch. The good news is, the teams they struggled to stop (McCracken, Hoptown, Madisonville) are all class 4A or higher with much more depth and they just wore Mayfield down. That shouldn't happen this week.

 

Lastly, Mayfield needs to play DISCIPLINED. They have had lapses this year (penalties, personal fouls, ejections) that are going weigh much heavier than they previously would have. The last thing they need is to help their opponent.

 

I really feel that if Mayfield plays up to their capability for 4 quarters, no 2A team can beat them. Too potent on offense and opportunistic defensively. But time will tell....

If Beechwood gets to QB, and I think they will, they will surprise folks in this on. I just have a feeling that this is the game where all the early season adversity against a brutal schedule pays off. I’m taking the Beechies.

 

On another note, looking up these state semifinal matchups, it’s crazy the distance some of these games cover. I’m of the opinion you open up Kroger Field, EKU, Louisville, and let all the Regional Champions experience next level settings. Insane a team has to travel 5 hours and play a game in state. Just my opinion.

Beechwood is a dangerous team. They throw the Ball well. If they have success moving the ball it could get tricky. Mayfield defense has been known to give up big plays, and that's the question mark on them, but still can't see it happening, but it can happen.

Mayfield QB does a great job of making his reads and getting rid of the ball. In the season finale, Madisonville stayed in zero coverage most of the first half. I questioned someone on the staff about that strategy, and their plan was to blitz and never let Stinson get comfortable. That enabled Mayfield to build a 36-13 first half lead.

Not trying to sound arrogant at all but there is NO stopping the big play against Mayfield. You have to score with them and turnovers are definitely possible considering they do throw the ball so much, so a couple interceptions is crucial to the recipe for beating them.

All places you listed are over 4 hours from Mayfield.

 

In my opinion even if you start playing these games at neutral sites that are 2.5-3.5 hours from each team it's just going to lower the overall attendance of the games. When it is played at one team's home field at least there is a big turn out, even if it is lopsided. If you start making each team travel 3 hours for the games then attendance will be way lower. One game (state championship) is enough on a neutral field, for example the NFL and the Super Bowl.

Haven’t seen the Mayfield kid play, but I have seen Hergott a few times. When I see the Mayfield kid rollout to his left and throw a 20 yd dart down the field to a receiver who toe taps the sideline, I’ll believe Ya. Kid has a great arm. Threads the needle all the time. Should be a great matchup.
