Wow!! We got possibly two of best small school powers in Kentucky in this matchup. I started a thread early in the season would we see a Beechwood vs. Mayfield Title game? Now that time is upon us we got the matchup a week early. These two are all but familiar with this week. When both teams where in Class 1A, they faced each other this week 5 times. Mayfield has won all 5 of those matchups. Mayfield made the jump to Class 2A in 2015. Now in 2019 Beechwood has made the jump to bring back these action pack games.

Mayfield sits at 12-1 on the season with its only blemish to 6A McCracken County. The Cardinals are averaging close to 47 points per game, while only giving up 17 points per game. Mayfield hopes to make it back for the 4th time in 5 years.

Beechwood comes into this matchup at 8-5. The record is very un Beechwood like, but when you have played the powerhouses they have this season then you know why it looks that way. The Tigers cruised past West Carter last week 42-7. The Tigers offense is averaging close to 29 points per game, while the defense is giving up just over 15 points per game.

What’s your thoughts on the matchup? Does Mayfield give Beechwood another Loss in this series? Or Does Beechwood play spoiler and get that first ever win playoff against the Cardinals?

Not many can go into War Memorial and win come playoff time, I’m definitely going with Mayfield.

Beechwood enters this game a bigger underdog that in any of the previous meetings between these two. It will be a huge upset if Beechwood wins.

Mayfield has only scored less than 35 points in a game once this year, and they scored 26 in that one. They are the top scoring offense in 2A. Beechwood has allowed more than 19 points in a game twice - Covington Catholic and Somerset. For Beechwood to have a chance, they have to hold Mayfield to less than 35 and hope their offense can stay hot. Beechwood has scored 37 or more in 6 of their last 7 games. Mayfield's defense has given up big point totals in a couple games against their tougher opponents.

Could Beechwood win this? It will take a lot of things going right. Between these two teams with current rosters, Beechwood might win 1 out of 10. I will be rooting for the Tigers to make next Friday's game that 1 out of 10 win.

Any chance the game time gets bumped up?

War Memorial is a grass field?

Has Beechwood played on grass this year?

What is the all-time series record?

Is Ft. Mitchell closer to Pittsburgh, PA than it is to Mayfield?

Beechwood could get to Heinz Field faster than they could get to Mayfield. Hopefully they can get some kind of hotel arrangements set up.

They said on the radio that Beechwood had mentioned to coach Joe about playing on Thursday. IMO that will not happen.

Beechwood has played 3 games on grass. They played Paintsville at Georgetown, Lloyd at Lloyd, and Holy Cross at Thomas Moore I believe. According to MaxPreps Beechwood is 0-6 all time against Mayfield. This is going to be a very difficult contest for the Tigers but my hope is I get to watch this Senior class compete for a 4 consecutive State Championship Title at Kroger Field.

To what? Thursday?

When Mayfield would travel to Beechwood they would go up a day early and stay in hotel.

To what? Thursday?

No, just earlier in the afternoon. It’s been done before when having such long travel times. Moving to Thursday would be stupid, and I find it extremely odd that BW would even ask to play then.

I find that hard to believe, but who knows. I was just wondering about an afternoon game instead of evening.

BB&T Field at Thomas More and Toyota Stadium at Georgetown are turf fields? Lloyd is grass. Just wondering if the Beechies had played on grass this season and it looks like they have played at least one game.

Mayfield is 7-0 all time vs. Beechwood, all 7 coming in the playoffs of course. Mayfield is 45-0 at home in the playoffs since their last such loss in 2003. And a Mayfield win would send them to their 10th state championship game in the last 11 years, the only exception being when they lost to eventual state champion CAL at CAL in the final four in 2016.

While all impressive stats, none of those mean anything for this game. Mayfield WILL score points, they just have to play the slightest bit of defense and I think they can pull this one out. Their offense is SO good and their defense can be so bad at times. Can't wait.
