@theguru I think it definitely hurts Frederick Douglass. Their first 5 games vs the other city schools (which they are required to play) are currently a combined 7-21.

This is just a glancing thought. I haven't analyzed or thought about it in depth. But it looks to me that wins are rewarded above level of competition. It looks like it is better to play mediocre opponents and get wins than it is to play really strong opponents and get losses. If you are going to schedule up, schedule up against a team you think you can beat at least more than 50% of the time. Look where Campbellsville is ranked currently in 1A and look at the teams above them. I think Campbellsville is a 3 or 4 touchdown favorite over several teams ranked above them currently. But let's wait and see what it looks like at the end of the year. Some of these glitches may work themselves out over the full schedule.

Does Final RPI stop at the end of the regular season, or it re-factored after Round 1 and Round 2.

I can imagine Beechwood putting this on their locker room bulletin board.

There are a lot more factors than just a win or a loss to consider. For Beechwood, I would guess that of all their games against higher level teams Covington Catholic would be the last one to go.

That is a great question and one numerous teams will have to ask themselves.

 

With these RPI ratings any time you "schedule up" and play a team you will be a decided underdog against it should be only at the discretion of understanding that you are most likely going to take a RPI hit and the trade off is competition and experience gained.

 

I think if I am Beechwood, I look to schedule a team like Scott, Ryle, or Conner instead where I have at worst a 50/50 shot and can still get some bonus points for winning against a team who will most likely carry 6-7 wins of their own.

 

If the staff subscribes to "iron sharpening iron", they may keep the game as a litmus test to let their teams know where they need to get to come November.

Obviously, you can't really do that in KY because pretty much everyone makes the playoffs, but maybe giving teams bonus points for playing a team that made it to the 3rd round or further the previous season.

If you are on the road in rounds 3 and 4 instead of at home, I thing they are a very big deal.

Looks like the KHSAA is giving a subtle hint to Trinity that they need to become a non sanctioned prep school. It also shows that Classes 1-3A will get favoritism for playing up, and that you’re basically doomed if 5A/6A if you don’t play your class. I know RPI matchups only matter to your class, but releasing them all together was a huge mistake.

 

I could be wrong, but I don't think Trinity could care less about the RPI or seedings. If they continue to play a schedule filled with regional powers, their seed in the KY playoffs will be irrelevant nine years out of ten.

I think you are correct there is some over analyzing, but at the same time, Home Field advantage is real and it is significant. With the way the Semi-Finals are done as well, this could be the difference in a team making a 5 to 6 hour trip or staying at home.

 

I think the biggest reaction has came from the fact that the product the KHSAA first rolled out was, to be kind, "incomplete at best". It seems they are trying to course correct a little and props to them, but to put something as significant as home field advantage on a new and already broken system definitely created a stir.

Another point I have made previously is there should be a "bonus" for the following:

- Road or Neutral Site Wins

- Wins against prior year District Champions

- Wins against teams who reached the Regional Finals (3rd Round) the year before.

 

I also feel the District alignments need to create a tweak. When you are essentially forced to play District teams with no control of who is in your District, it creates an issue.

 

I still insist for teams in a 5-team District you can either choose to take your lowest scoring District win in the RPI and have the option to keep it, or duplicate our lowest scoring Non-District performance (win or loss).

 

In many cases a team that plays a tough non-district schedule will get a slight boost from their weakest loss over a win over a 0-10 District mate they are forced to play.

I think that's more valid argument I hear a lot on these boards.

 

However, my counter to this is simply based on which route "prepares" you for a state title hunt?

 

Suppose a less talented/impressive team has a higher RPI over you, but you have played a tougher schedule against the best competition? Which route is going to prepare you for the tough fight in rounds 3 and beyond to win a state title?

 

The RPI doesn't decide who is in the playoffs and only comes into play in the 3rd round and 4th. I'd rather go to an undefeated, higher RPI and play if they haven't been battle tested against some of the other state contenders. I'd schedule to prepare me to win a title regardless of some RPI numbers. :thumb:

Depends upon who you are playing. If you are playing Mediocre High who has rigged their schedule for wins and high RPI, and I am rooting for Tough as Nails High I wouldn't mind going there.

 

Mediocre High may not have played a single, higher level team, until the 3rd Round and face Tough as Nails as their first REAL TEST.
