I agree and think the running clock rule needs to be change. Catholic was only a TD from it in the first half. IMO the clock should stop when the score gets back under the 36 points.

Ten or so states don't have a mercy rule and most states that do the running clock starts at the beginning of the second half regardless of the spread in the first half. one year in the playoffs Highlands had a running clock on Boyd County in the first quarter.

According to WTVQ channel 36 there was a total of 1183 passing yards by both teams. Unreal

Or perhaps the running clock only starting before halftime if one team takes a 42 point lead. That'd be ideal imo.

Tates Creek opened the game with a scoring drive and then an onsides kick and another score to take a 14-0 lead before Beau Allen touched the ball. Tates Creek also had a goal stand to stop Lexington Catholic from scoring on one drive and took it the length of the field for another score. I believe Allen was intercepted in both the first half and second half. The Commodores were also in the red-zone at one point before getting two 15-yard penalties killing one drive.

On the running clock. 35 points is just too little of a spread. I never favored the 35 point margin. It should be 42. It should also only start after halftime - unless coaches agree to start it during the first half.

 

I do get why once the clock starts it stays running. If the leading pulls it starters and then the other team closes the gap playing its starters the margin may close but not necessarily because it was really a competitive match-up. Basically, if you to running clock you are essentially declaring a winner. In roller-hockey, we had an 8-goal mercy rule. And it was not a running clock. When you reached an 8-goal differential the game was over.

If you're blowing someone out 36-0, and the result is inevitable, but the opponent scores a quick seven against the better team's JV defense, then that clock has no business stopping. I'd say make the clock stop once the losing team cuts it to 21.

When the KHSAA first adopted the running clock rule the margin was 45 points.
