Even though LC lost the game and Allen put up big numbers. Does this improve his status for Mr Football?

If I'm a voter and I watched that game, his stock DEFINITELY goes up in my book.

Insane win for CovCath. They did what winning teams and programs do....win when they aren’t at their best against quality competition.

Congrats on the win!

Surprised Lex Catholic hung with them but Covington Catholic took care of business on offense and got the win.

Beau Allen was cool as a cucumber in the backfield all night long, even after being sacked 4 or 5 times. He commanded the Knights' run-play offense almost flawlessly. Cov Cath would bring everyone at him blitzing and he'd dump it to a flare receiver or air it out with ease to someone streaking out to the flat...all...night...long. Jackson Corbett was phenomenal at moving through the Colonels' secondary. If it wasn't Corbett, then Allen could always look to Blake Busson, Jack Gohmann or Dylan Bracken. Ryan Nichols was always a great option to keep the defense guessing if they were favoring the pass too often.

On the defense, Philippe Irumva had a great game at linebacker. He's hard hitting, and he's fast. He was quick to fill holes up front, and great when he was dropping back into coverage. Lex Cath's gang-tackling was great all night - ESPECIALLY in the first half of the game. They were playing with a fire under them.

Cov Cath doesn't score after they have a 1st down on the 15 yard line on the opening drive of the game. They had it 4th and 1 on the 6 yard line and didn't punch it forward for a yard. I think the first half momentum swung in Lex Cath's favor from that stop. 7 points left on the field.

Then after Lex Cath's first possession is stalled with a holding penalty on a first down play and then the drive ends with turnover on a bad punt snap that Cov Cath converted into a touchdown drive on a short field, the Knights still weren't phased.

Colonels have the ball 1st and 10 on Lex Cath's 20 yard line, and they don't end up with gaining anything on 3 downs and settle for a 37 yard field goal (which Gronotte kicked with enough for a 50 yarder). 4 points left on the field.

Then Lex Cath turns around and pops Cov Cath in the mouth with an 80 yard touchdown pass on their first play from scrimmage to go up 21-10.

Cov Cath shows some life with their second-last drive of the half which ended in Daniel Felix's touchdown reception/run. Cov Cath pulls withing 4 point. Then they take over at their own 45 yard line after Michael Mayer knocks the ball loose as Allen was preparing to pass with less than a minute to go in the half, and fumble the ball at the 16 yard line on what would have been a first down completion with 11 seconds in the half. That's at least 3, maybe 7 points left on the field.

That's 14 or 18 points left on the field in the first half by Cov Cath. Disappointing look. Looking back at it after the fact, some (a lot) of these Cov Cath players are simply not used to being behind in a game...from the Colonel Youth level on up to varsity. Having to scrap and fight back from a deficit isn't something they've experienced much of at all. It was frustrating to watch for sure, but to their credit, even after coming out a little slow in the 2nd half the Colonels still did what they had to do and they staged their comeback. That's something to be proud of.

And.....ahem.....sorry about that "nail in the coffin" comment from the game thread. #WithASpiritThatWillNotDie

Lex Cath's kicker Max DeGraff saved two touchdowns on kickoff returns with ankle tackles on Cov Cath's returner. One on the opening kickoff of the game, and one after Lex Cath's first possession/TD of the second half.

Also, Lex Cath's punter Brennan Anderson was down on the field for a while after he took a hard pop in the helmet when Noah Powers was diving for the ball after the punt snap went long over Anderson's head on Lex Cath's first possession. I didn't see if he made it back in the game. I hope he's alright.

Is he only a punter? I don't believe the Knights punted after their first series. Don't remember hearing Anderson's name after that.

#3 Kimwanga Mafuta. Just became eligible this week, per the broadcast.

He took a WALLUP from Michael Mayer in the second half.

Does this win boost Michael Mayer's chances for Mr. Football? Head to head battle versus the leading candidate and Mayer gets the win.

I think it helped Beau more than Mayer.

Plus Beau is still headed to UK.

But Mayer got the win. And Mayer is the reason CCH won that game.

LexCath was supposed to get blown out. Running clock put on them. Beau is the reason they almost pulled off what would have been the biggest upset of the year.

And you are forgetting anti-NKY bias throughout the rest of the state.

And Beau is going to UK.

I saw an AP voter post his weekly votes for the AP rankings last week. In 4A he didn’t put Boyle County anywhere in the top 10 at all. In 1A he didn’t have NCC anywhere in the top 10. The amount of voters like that outnumbers the amount of voters who think like you and I.

Long story short, IMO, this game should give Mayer the nod over Beau but it won’t. Just like when Boyle County defeats LexCath it won’t help out Reese Smith’s chances either. But it should.

But Mayer got the win. And Mayer is the reason CCH won that game.

This game did MUCH more for Allen than it did Mayer. Regardless of the outcome.

What were Mayer's numbers in the game?

What were Mayer's numbers in the game?

Someone else will have to help with the offensive numbers, but on defense Mayer had seven solo tackles, one sack and a forced fumble.

I think it helped Beau more than Mayer.

Plus Beau is still headed to UK.

I agree.

The big thing that will not show up in the stats is the running plays CCH got in the 4th quarter were behind Mayer. Then on the game winning 2 point try they hand the ball to Mayer. Everyone in the stadium knew where the ball was going and Mayer still got into the endzone.

As to those saying this game would be a CCH blowout, they haven't seen CCH. CCH this year is not as good as the last two years. It takes a good team with a good passing offense like Lex Cath, but that type of team will be a tough matchup for CCH. If the Lex Cath receiver doesn't drop the 3rd down pass near the end game, Lex Cath probably wins.
