Why Is There No Love For USC?

Featured Replies

I seem to read repeatedly on here how much everyone hates Southern Cal. I am curious as to why.

Now, if its because everyone's perception is that they cheat based upon the Leinart-living-with-Jarrett and Reggie-Bush's-family's-house-deal, so be it, but for as big as those stories were for a while, they seem to be pretty trivial now. Moreover, that is all that we've ever heard about USC despite the fact they get more media attention than anyone. Their program has had no suspensions, and far less instances of investigation than, say, Ohio St., who gets all kinds of luv on this board.

This is a great academic school. Their graduation rate for players is subpar, but not as bad as several SEC teams. Their coach has more fun than any coach in the NCAA. Their players flip the ball to the ref when they score, and don't do end zone dances. They regularly put great players into the NFL. They are in a very, very tough recruiting zone and still re-load every year. They've had a great 5 year run. Some years the Pac-10 is not real good, like last year, and some years its pretty strong, like this year. Either way, the Trojans schedule difficult non-conference games, and still do very well (2-year contract with Virginia Tech '03 and '04; 2-year contract with Auburn '03 and '04; 2-year contract with Arkansas '05 and '06; 2-year contract with Nebraska '06 and '07; play Notre Dame every year, etc.)

What is there not to like about this program, other than that they are really, really good?

I root for USC when they aren't playing one of "my teams."

I've been a fan since the late 80's. My cross-town rival in high school had a linebacker whose tail I kicked on the field, he got a scholarship to USC and later played briefly for the Philadelphia Eagles, so I always fantasized that I was good enough to play for USC. Anyway, I followed them closely for many years, and I've suffered through some bad, bad seasons. These last 5 years have finally been my comeuppance, and then I read all the stuff on this board.

USC is my favorite collegiate football team (other than UK and we know what that means). I've been a Trojan fan since I started watching football in the late '80's. Rodney Peete was their QB and he was my favorite player. I remember watching them play UCLA when Aikman was there...they were a serious title contender that year before losing to the Irish and Lou Holtz and the Rocket. Like you, I suffered through the down years...I remember some players from that time...Todd Marinovich, Mazio Royster, etc.

Despite my bias, I still maintain that with a win over UCLA, they are easily the most deserving team to be matched up against OSU. Since the loss against Oregon State, they have been dominant. And everyone knows that they're loaded with talent. I think they have a much better chance to beat the Buckeyes than many people on here are giving them.

And, the best news is, the future is bright. They could likely be even better next year.

Because they're a ND rival. :D

Seriously though, if I were a top notch high school football player, it'd be hard to pass up a chance to play for Pete Carroll.

I know I shouldn't like them, because they are ND's rival and have kicked our butts for a few years in a row now. But I just really like Pete Carroll and how he coaches. Also I know if I was a player USC would be almost like a dream school to play at, they are a top notch football program and out in California, that is hard to pass up. And that is why they are able to reload every year because they always get the best players...

They are my favorite, other than UK. Probably, not a lot of love because they are from the West Coast. I remember J.K. McKay, Pat Haden, Anthony Davis, Lynn Swann, etc. Always been enamored with them. Love their fight song and all the other songs their band plays. The Men of Troy. They, to me, are the epitome of College Football.

If you like tradition, consistent winning, and amazing talent, I'm not sure how you do not like SC. The OSU-USC Rose Bowl games in the 70s were awesome. AD, Archie Griffin, Corny Green, Charles White, etc

I really don't have a dislike for USC I just do not care for PC and his Hollywierd persona. I enjoyed the Trojans when I was younger. Guys like OJ, AD, Swann all were great players and made college football exciting and the Trojans were always a great team. He (carroll) does make USC exciting for his home fans with the open practice and fanfare that goes with it.

I am a fan of all college football especially the game at the NAIA level.

I like USC and hope that they play Ohio State and drill Ohio State in the NC game.

2001 6-6, lost to Utah 10-6 in the Las Vegas Bowl

December 15, 2000 - Pete Carroll named head coach

2000 5-7, no bowl game

1999 6-6, no bowl game

1998 8-5, lost 28-19 to TCU in the Sun Bowl

USC has scheduled Ohio St. for the second week in both 2008 and 2009.

No one likes to see a team on top forever. It's a petty reason to dislike a team, but that's what it usually is. I don't like Pac 10 schools in general and I just got sick of seeing USC rammed down my throat for so many straight years because they were always good. I just like to see another team get a shot. This looks like their third straight year in the BCS Title Game and fourth straight year with a shot at a piece of the national championship.

USC football has that Duke basketball flavor...It is easy to hate watching someone just keep winning...USC is on top of the game and that is what makes them hard to root for. I really don't care for USC but they one heck of a team to watch play.....They are so talented and play so hard, plus a class guy like Pete Carroll. But matched up against Ohio State, I have to say that I would gladly root for the Men of Troy...

USC has been winning. Seems like after a while, once someone keeps putting up the W's, they tend to become less and less popular among the majority looking toward the next "hot" team.

I like USC and hope that they play Ohio State and drill Ohio State in the NC game.

I definitely think they can beat OSU too.
