My son and I were talking Beechwood football tonight. The question that came up was who is the best football team Beechwood ever beat? That led me to talking about Harrodsburg in 1996 and 1997 and Dennis Johnson, who played for Harrodsburg. Beechwood beat Harrodsburg for state titles back to back in 1996 and 1997. I went to wikipedia and found this:

 

Dennis Johnson grew up in Kentucky, where the local high school had very low enrollment. Due to Harrodsburg High School's small size, Johnson was allowed to suit up with the high school varsity team as a second grader. He already stood 5'7" and weighed 170 pounds. His brother, a third grader, was also on the team. The brothers rarely got into a game, but they created enough attention that the state changed the eligibility rules for low-enrollment schools. The brothers had to wait until the seventh grade to play varsity football again. When he returned to the team at age 11, he earned honorable mention all-state honors as a defensive end. Johnson ended his high school career with seven seasons of play and six varsity letters. He was selected as the Sports Illustrated National Player of the Year and the National Defensive Player of the Year by USA Today and The Sporting News.

 

Harrodsburg may not be the best team Beechwood ever beat, but Dennis Johnson has to be the best player Beechwood ever faced and defeated.

I know! Isn't that insane? He was 5'7" 170 pounds in the second grade. Kentucky changed the state rules on eligibility to play football because of him.

Was Craig Yeast from there? And Julius Yeast too?

Julius Yeast was a defensive lineman on the 1996 team. Derrick Johnson, Dennis' brother was also on the defensive line. They also had another big athletic lineman named Patton. Their front four on defense were huge.

 

Craig Yeast graduated in the early 90's from Harrodsburg.

For my money, the best player Beechwood has ever beaten, was Carlos Snow, from C.A.P.E. High School in Cincinnati. Snow went on to star at Ohio St. That C.A.P.E. team also had Vinnie Clark and David Pool who both played in the NFL.

I believe Julius Yeast had a Scholarship to Ohio State.

Couldn't agree with you more Eye of the Tiger...I can tell you from personal experience (when we ran any double tight set in the 1996 state final and I had to come down from wide receiver to play tight end and block Dennis) that it was next to impossible. He was way stronger, way faster, and just an absolute beast of a football player. The guy was incredible. Their entire defense was extremely athletic, tough & fast. They were a great football team.

He committed to Ohio State for sure, am not sure if ever played or even showed up to campus for them.

There was another player from Harrodsburg that went to Ohio State and eventually transferred back to EKU. The name Yeast doesn't ring a bell but maybe my bell has been rung one too many times to remember.

I played against Dennis in 1985.

That Harrodsburg Defensive Line was amazing.

 

And on Carlos Snow and CAPE, CAPE didn't play any defense but yes they were loaded with big time talent.
