KRS 237.109 - Carry Concealed Firearms - From the Boone County Sheriff's Office, KY

Featured Replies

Class A misdemeanor, so up to a year in jail. Usually though, a judge would simply suggest the person pay court costs and go through the process of getting a concealed carry permit. At least that's what I observed a lot in NKY.

Does this law change anything for police officers? I assume not. They always have to think someone might be armed anyway, even before this change in the law.

I’ve talked to a few and they didn’t like it.

It depends on who you talk to. Some officers don't like folks with guns concealed no matter what the circumstances, others see it as the state actually doing the right thing and loosening restraints on what is viewed as a constitutional right.

I guess I fall somewhere in between. My thought process when dealing with folks that had a concealed carry permit in the past was that they were probably less likely to be a threat because they've obviously got a clear criminal record if they were able to get that permit. That and the thought process of assuming anyone you encounter may have a weapon, until you're certain they don't.

I will still suggest folks get a permit though, specifically for when they travel out of Kentucky and for purchasing guns. Someone with a CDW does not have to pay the processing fee that is associated with the background check. In fact I need to go get mine again for that very reason but keep putting it off.

It will be interesting to see how this all pans out. Will crime rates go up, down, remain unchanged? Will there be more heroes taking out bad guys? Only time will tell. I, personally am for it. Bad guys already have guns.

Will shootings go up or down?

Will more or fewer innocent people be shot?

Will more people be in court for shootings?

Will crimes involving guns go up or down?

I hope I'm wrong, but I bet all of those go up.

Any reason, or just a gut feeling?

My guess is none of these will change much at all. The vast majority of gun owners are decent human beings and respectful and aware of how to handle guns safely. Because of this, I don't think there will be a huge surge of folks rushing out and beginning to carry everywhere. And it probably won't increase the number of idiots carrying, because those folks probably didn't respect the carry laws to begin with, and were carrying anyway.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the new law. The best part of getting a concealed carry licence is learning firearm safety, self defense legal fundamentals such as when the use of deadly force may be justified and criminal and civil ramifications of using deadly force, proper shooting technique, fundamentals of shooting, pistol parts and operation, firearm maintenance, State and Federal law relating to handgun carry just to name a few.

I would agree that everything you mention is important. But even with getting a license, I'm not sure that enough put in the time and practice that is necessary to become and remain proficient. I know I certainly don't. Even going through the class, I don't feel proficient enough to carry, and thus, never do.

As with everything, practice is key. If you carry, you should do your best to keep yourself up to par and review the legal responsibilities often. You sound like a good, responsible gun owner, rjs4470. The fact you don't currently carry because you don't feel proficient right now just enforces that. :thumb:

The biggest thing about carrying for me was being comfortable, and I didn’t get comfortable until I just did it for a while. No amount of range time would have ever made me comfortable just having a gun on my person, there’s only one way to do that.

As someone who has left her cell phone in public places on more than once occasion, I would say that concealed and carry is not for me.

I work in a very urban area and am always concerned about the number of non law abiding citizens who carry. I have no problem with more law abiding citizens doing it.
