KRS 237.109 - Carry Concealed Firearms - From the Boone County Sheriff's Office, KY

Featured Replies

Why would someone choose concealed carry versus open carry?

Because they don't want the attention that carrying a gun on your waist brings.

If someone walks into a building to shoot at people, they are likely starting with the guy with a gun on his hip.

Wouldn't it deter the criminal if everyone did open carry? If the criminal walks in and sees three people armed, wouldn't that stop the shooting from ever happening?

Yee haw! The wild wild west grows some more. Thanks for the information.

Is it ok to just put the six shooter in a hip holster in plain view? That would be a great deterent.

Kentucky has been an open carry state this whole time. I've never understood why people would want to advertise having a gun on their person though.

If we ever got to a point where the majority of people did open carry, maybe. But I personally don't want that kind of attention.

Deterrence. If people see you carrying, it will prevent crime.

I think it also encourages more idiots who have no business carrying to start packing. :lol2:

I don’t think this will do anything to encourage the idiots. I believe those idiots are already carrying. I don’t think concealed carry laws did anything to stop the idiots from walking around strapped.

Or it will lead to more people calling in for reports of man/woman with a gun, because that happens often. People calling in are uneducated and don't know the laws.

As has already been stated by others, I don't want people knowing I have my gun on me until I pull it out should the need arise. I personally have always viewed open carriers as attention seekers to some extent. Sorry if that hurts any open carriers feelings but that's just my opinion.

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of eliminating concealed carry and going to open carry only. Then we will get the true deterrence factor. You make the penalties stiff for concealed carry so any criminal caught with a concealed weapon pays a heavy price. If everyone who carries does it openly, people will be much more used to seeing guns and get more comfortable with it.

I also say we put a sticker or special license plate on vehicles with guns on board. That will alert policemen that there could be a weapon on board. It will reduce road rage incidents if cars with guns on board are clearly marked. The more visible we make weapons, the better deterrence factor. I bet people will start being a lot nicer to each other everywhere if they see guns all around them.

In some states when a plate is ran, if a drivers license attached to that car has a concealed carry permit, the officer is alerted.

I also think anything that calls attention to gun owners would also make them likely targets of gun thieves. The majority of guns used in gun crimes are stolen from someone, because the average criminal can't buy them legally...so they steal guns any chance they get.

What do you consider a heavy price? Convicted felons in possession of a handgun is a Class C felony. That's a prison sentence ranging from 5-10 years.

That works.

What is the penalty for someone who isn't licensed to carry and who does not have a record?

I guess the problem there would be if someone went to a place where they could not carry their gun and would be forced to leave it in their car. Then that would be an easy target for a thief. Otherwise, I would say no one should leave their gun in their car. We want them carrying that gun in plain view to get the full benefits.

One thing I like to do on Saturday mornings is watch The Rifleman. It does remind us that there was a time when open carry was a way of life. It would take me some getting used to, but I don’t have a problem with it.

That works.

There is no penalty now, or did you mean prior to the new law?

Yes, prior to the new law.
