February 28, 20197 yr Why all the hate for the Phillies? I grew up listening to or watching the Phillies nearly every day. And outside of a few good years in the 70's, and early 2000's, they really haven't been a very good team. I'm not sure how I feel about the signing. Harper has been on a rollercoaster the last few years. No trade, no opt outs, he might finish his career with the Phillies.

I’m not sure there has ever been a player in the history of the sport worth 13 years. The Phillies are definitely setting up to still make a run at hometown guy Mike Trout as well. Could you imagine those guys on the same team? Yikes.

I’m not sure there has ever been a player in the history of the sport worth 13 years. The Phillies are definitely setting up to still make a run at hometown guy Mike Trout as well. Could you imagine those guys on the same team? Yikes. Well, with no trade, and no opt outs, Harper ain't going anywhere. And that number likely won't be considered as huge as it looks now, 7 or 8 years down the road. If the Phillies win anytime in the next several years, and Harper has a couple MVP/near MVP years, I don't think anyone will complain about the deal, regardless of what it looks like when Harper is in his late 30's.

February 28, 20197 yr Tell that to Angels fans. If you’re talking about Pujols, this is a little different. Pujols was in his 30’s when he signed the long deal. Harper is 26, and the Phillies get (hopefully) much of Harper’s prime in the deal. The Angels didn’t get any of Pujols’ prime. Obviously there’s risk in the deal, and it could flop badly.

Those contracts always have a way of outliving their usefulness. If they win a title or two on the front end, trust me, Phillie fans won’t care about the back end. Interesting note, I read somewhere that when Harper collects his last check in 2031, Bobby Bonilla will still have 4 years left on his deal with the Mets.

It’s not really the money that’s the issue to me. The money is what it is. He was going to get paid. But 13 years is a LONG time.
