March 4, 20197 yr As a Phillies fan, I hope not. On the surface though, the average yearly value of this deal, still allows the Phillies a lot of flexibility to make moves if necessary. If they get a really good Bryce Harper for the first 4 or 5 years of this deal, there will be very few complaints. I think the only way this contract becomes a regret is if Harper turns out to be an average player who misses a bunch of games. It’s easy to say now that as long you get 4-5 good years. 8-9 league average/below average will be tough to just look past if that money is tied up and can’t be used on other players. 13 years is just too long.

Please stop trying to reason with me. I’ve pretty much talked myself into believing this was the right move for the Phillies. ;-)

I don’t think anyone believes they won’t be upside down at some point in this contract. Like I said, if they get 4 or 5 great years and a few solid years and get a World Series out of him, folks won’t be too bent out of shape. 13 years is a long time, but it insures they have Harper his entire prime, and guarantees them flexibility throughout the life of the deal. There’s a very good chance he’s not even the highest paid player most of these years.
March 7, 20197 yr Once you digest the deal and the shock value and sit down and look at it, the Phillies did well here.
