November 20, 200619 yr If the problem is that players are in position but not making the plays, doesn't that come down on position coaches? Does Archer coach a position as well as calling the defense?

November 20, 200619 yr I kind of like our Loyola Marymount style of football. Its like Bo Kimble on grass (take that anyway you'd like) - you know, we'll let them score just so we can get the ball back. As long as we win by 2-3 points, I say stick to it!

I've often spoke on Archer and Brooks....enough said by me but I'm enjoying this year winning year, for a change. A lot of excitement, fans haven't been turning out at Commonwealth but they certainly deserve a competitive/winning team.

I don't like a football team that pretty much gets ran over like a high school team on defense.
November 20, 200619 yr Games such as UL-Monroe all come down to preperation the week before the game, and falls back directly on Archer. A good coach would not let a team play down to the level of opponets, and this is what I feel Archer did with the UK defense. Someone alluded that Archer does not take Defense as seriosuly against mid level teams as he does against top caliber teams, and teams do this throughout the country. However, most teams have talented enough Defenses to get away with it, Kentucky does not. I feel that if Kentucky's D had hit the film study room, and pregames a sound Defensive gameplan for Monroe, then we would have handed them an easy loss. Thus I feel Archers lack of consistency in getting after his players and laziness in furocity during practices made his defense fail. Like said it all goes back to the gameplan, and you must want it every week in order to be sucessful on this level.
November 20, 200619 yr From a scheme part, every scheme at this level has something in it to counter what an offense is doing to you. It is the job of the D-Coordinator to recognize what the offense is doing to hurt you and make a call to put your players in a position to win. Sometimes, an offense gets your number and you make a number of wrong calls and that is the way it goes. However, when an offense continues to run the same plays over and over and no adjustment is made to give the players a chance, it comes down on the defensive coordinator. UK constantly didn't have enough players in the box. Players wer having to beat a blocker plus try to make tackles one on one which is very tough. They looked as though there was no base Defensive to call to try and stop the bleeding. (Which is the mark of a good Coach, always has a fundamentally sound base to regroup with). Even Archer said he called everything he had and nothing worked. How about getting a fundamentally sound base defense and going from there.
November 21, 200619 yr Ye of little faith...:sssh:    I can't help it, I have watched UK football through ther years:scared: " I would like to be more optomistic but I don't think that it would work out:sssh: "
November 21, 200619 yr Archer is playing a bunch of Freshmen and sophmores. Nothing wrong with scheme. Getting getter on defense happens in the off season. The defense has had some injuries. Just like the offense last season the defense is having a few growing pains. But if the need some one Joe Lee Dunn needs a job.
November 21, 200619 yr How many people on this thread have experience coaching or playing D1 football? I led the 'Cats to 4 National Titles on NCAA 2007 for XBox on the Heisman level so I feel I am qualified to speak here. Archer sucks. He obviously does not teach all facets of defense well. Under his watch, UK players in the secondary and open field would consistently arm tackle and there is no consistency with the zones, prevents, blitzing schemes. Look at the Central Michigan game this year. Kentucky was forcing turnovers and forcing CMU into mistakes and bad throws by rushing the quarterback sometimes with 3 or more guys. Instead of staying with that and putting the nail in the coffin Archer pulls back and opts to play more and more zone. The result? UK escapes a game they should have won by 3 scores. I am long time Steelers fan and Archer was a whale of a linebackers coach during his time in Pittsburgh. He coached guys like Jason Gildon, Mike Vrabel, Greg Lloyd, Earl Holmes, Chad Brown, and Joey Porter just to name a few. So he can coach position wise, but as a defensive coordinator he leaves a lot to be desired. As the late great Owen Hart used to say "Enough is enough and it's time for a change!"
November 21, 200619 yr Two things about the defense. One is tackling. The tackling has been horrible the past few games. Alot of arm tackling or whiffs. Now to me this is players and coaches fault. Apparently if they aren't tackling well you would get more practice at it. Then the second problem that sticks out to me is that whe the linebackers drop into coverage they have a very hard time "finding" recievers. This is also both coaches and pllayers faults. One thing about it their defense will not win a game for them. I think for them to be competitive year in and year out in the SEC the defense has to be alot better.

Nothing wrong with his schemes....go back and look at his average points allowed, while a defensive coordinator at UK and not just under Brooks. His defensive schemes, are more of a prevent and not designed to stop anyone. His points allowed average, is not good for his career at UK.

They smack you in the mouth! 3-4.....4-3... it hasn't mattered! It is sad when you are in a shootout with a team like Monroe. Where in the heck is that anyways? That's the first time I've ever heard of that school and I've watched college ball almost all of my life! For as much punishment as Brooks has taken since being at UK.... Archer has showed nothing!

On defense you can only do 2 things in the secondary Play man or Zone. You have a choice to blitz someone. Up front you can do a few stunts. Bottom Line the Jims and Joes on defense are not as good as the Jims and Joe on the other team.
