9th Region Boys Tourney - Pre-District Picks and Favorite

Featured Replies

I would not be surprised to see Beechwood not even make the region. Even though they beat them just a week ago. Holy Cross will be a difficult first round district game for them.

At the end of the day I still dont think it's as open as people say. I think it's still Cooper or CovCath who wins it. The door is slightly open now for other teams compared to the last few years, but I dont think it is as open as some may be saying right now.

I’m not from that area of Kentucky and not as knowledgeable about the teams as many BGPers but imo either Cooper or Covington Catholic will win the 9th.

Holy Cross is 9-18 and a week ago lost on their home court to Beechwood by 24 points.

But ... anything is possible.

I believe 1 of 2 teams will win it (CovCath/Cooper). And, 2 teams could “shock the region” and win it (Beechwood & Newport). And, 4 teams could make any game interesting and possibly win a game (Conner, Highlands, St. Henry, Lloyd).

I don’t see Dixie or even NewCath making it to the region and winning a game.

I hope it’s the “top 8”, and that will make it the most interesting.

Mayer back for CCH is a new problem for all the teams, except CCH themselves.

Go Dixie!!!

Go Dixie!!!

I was certainly wrong about Dixie! I’m owning that. Good for them. I’ll stick with my projection of not winning a game, but with that said, they made the final last year in stunning fashion. Congrats to Coach S. and his guys.

I think Cooper would love a rematch with CCH on neutral floor!

Of course-I am hoping to see these teams at full strength.

I dont think anyone, other than you, was stunned by Dixie going to the finals last year. Cooper and CCH were on the same side of the bracket.

Dixie's side was a cake walk. They had to beat Ryle and Holy Cross who were both coming apart at the seams.

Dixie was a much better team last year and easily number 3 or 4 in the region.

Dixie was average last year. On the weaker side of the bracket, sure, but, if memory serves, many, or most, picked Newport to come out of that side of the bracket.

CCH & Cooper are the clear favorites going into next week. Experience always plays a factor the deeper these teams get. Depending on the draw, I could see Beechwood and/or Newport making a run.

It's now or never for Newport and their senior class. I have a feeling they will knock off either Cooper or Cov Cath. Too good of group to just go quietly.

I believe the draw is tomorrow - there will be some great matchups regardless of how they slice it:

District Winners vs Losers:

Newport

Beechwood

Cooper

Highlands

CCH

Connor

St Henry and Dixie are undetermined.

Toss up anyone can win it this year!!

Typically I pull for the team that has the best chance of making some noise at Rupp, which in my mind this year would be Cooper, yet I can't help myself from pulling for an underdog such as St. Henry.

Can they do it?

Probably not, but they sure do have some nice talent, and have had some bright moments this season, and add to that a real good coach, and you just never know.

I'm guessing they'll be considered around 7th in the pack, but this year the talent and competitiveness is pretty strong top to bottom in the field of 8, and no team outside of maybe Dixie should be a surprise with who's gonna put together 3 good games to take the prize.

Last season an average Dixie snuck into the finals with the lucky break of being on the weak side of the bracket, but this season there really won't be a weak side. The teams making it to the finals will certainly do it in deserving fashion.

Good luck to all teams, and I wouldn't dare miss any of the action. It's gonna be a sensational 9th Region Tournament, and for me it's just like Christmas time all over again.
