A New Mr. Football Award for Kentucky?

Featured Replies

I saw a Tweet from @Nathaniel Bryan that the Kentucky Football Coaches Association (KFCA) is going to be giving out its own Mr. Football award for the state of Kentucky - separate from the Associated Press' Mr. Football award - starting this year, and will be doing so by handing out the award during halftime of one of the KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl games at Kroger Field this December. The winner will be voted on by members of the KFCA rather than determined through an AP vote, as the currently existing Mr. Football award is.

I've not seen anything else anywhere on this aside from Nate's tweet...but it sounds pretty interesting. And it would certainly seem that the KHSAA is right on board with the KFCA on this one if the KHSAA is allowing this to be awarded at one of their premiere events over the course of the year.

I think a statewide representation of coaches would do a better job of picking Mr. Football than the current setup. At least put some parameters on the reward.

Well these are the “Everyone Gets a Trophy” days so this makes sense.

Could this be in response to Rondale Moore not winning last year, especially with what he’s doing at Purdue this year?

NO.

It's in response to the AP will name Mr. Football and release its All-State Team whenever it feels like it.

KFCA preferred a big award like that be recognized during football season. Been told by several folks it has NOTHING to do with Rondale Moore not winning.

Actually Jason Frakes is the one who tipped me off. He tweeted about it before I did.

I just called and confirmed it and then put it out there.

You get a trophy, you get a trophy, you get a trophy, everybody gets a trophy!

Some places got it right. :thumb:

Hopefully. That award lost all credibility with me last year.

NO.

The KFCA will be giving out its OWN Mr. Football/Overall Kentucky State Player of the Year starting this year

Award, still to be named, will be handed out during HALFTIME of the 5A state final.

This will be voted on by KFCA members and is NOT in conjunction with AP Mr. Football.

Just a different group handing out a top player award. While there is the Heisman in college football, the AP still hands out a National Player of the Year. The AFCA might, too.

This is no different. Just another honor.

Probably be called the Paul Hornung Award or named after a prominent high school coach from KY

The Chuck Smith Award.

I’m interested in seeing the reception to this award. Initially I don’t think the general public will care but 10-15 years from now if the AP hasn’t changed their ways I can see people gravitating to accepting this award as the more prestigious award.

It’s a shame the coaches and the AP couldn’t come together to make the naming of Mr. Football and All State teams a much better process that involves them both. Having competing Player of the Year awards trying to have the same relevance is something I personally do not like.

That makes sense.

Are ALL of the head high school football coaches in Kentucky members of the KFCA?

Are assistant coaches allowed to join the KFCA? If so, are all assistant coaches voting members when it comes to the awards that the KFCA has been giving out previously?

I'd like to see some more info to prove to me that this isn't just going to be another cluster/popularity contest/homer vote like the Associated Press' Mr. Football Award has appeared to become.
