Is this the "Beginning of the End" for Kentucky High School Sports?

Why practice in 90 degree heat when you just compete on Madden Football. Maybe have the State Fortnite Championship.

Or you could do both, which is what kids are doing already.

Are you thinking kids will stop playing real sports to play video games?

You would be surprised, I’ve seen it with plenty in the work that I do and a lot of them have been really talented too.

It's a well proven fact that kids that are involved in extracurricular activities do better in school...both academically and socially. If eSports gets kids involved beyond the 8 to 3 every day, I think it's a plus. Same for band, academic team, archery, bass fishing, trap shooting or any of a myriad of other activities.

I personally would prefer games like Madden instead of simulated war games, but that's my own issue.

Collins High School to host Esports Season Zero Championship Monday

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 23, 2019

The Season Zero Esports State Championship will be determined Monday at Collins High School, when squads from St. Henry District and Boyle County square off to decide the first state champion in a best-of-three League of Legends match. Admission to the esports state championship is free, though interested fans should reserve their tickets online at LobbyGG.

Those unable to attend Monday’s championship can watch the event live online through the NFHS Network or Twitch.tv (Twitch).

Through its partnership with PlayVs, the KHSAA offered its member schools a new participation opportunity in October to join Season Zero and compete in League of Legends. The esports program will expand for the spring season, with team competing in League of Legends, SMITE and Rocket League. For more information on the Spring Season, visit

I had a rant all ready to unleash upon the masses, ha - but instead I'll just say I totally agree with a previous poster who stated that ANY activity, sports or otherwise, that keeps kids interested in school and learning is fantastic...

For the record, just because there is something you aren't familiar with doesn't mean it isn't out there - another poster had raised the question to the gist of "if the KHSAA doesn't sponsor it, it isn't a sport." Georgia's governing body includes all of their traditional sports, but also includes One Act Play, Literary, ESPORTS, Dance, Wheelchair sports and more!

Growing up as a band kid, I think it's GREAT that these kids get the support and recognition they need & deserve. As a student and a teacher I have seen too many kids treated as afterthoughts. Not cool. Remember, these other activities do not take away from your child or school and their chosen sport, at the risk of being labeled a bleeding heart; it just isn't an "either or" scenario.

And I don't think sports will be hurt by all of these other activities... peace

Post more often!

I would have loved to have this in high school. I think if it was offered back in my day I probably wouldnt have played football. Baseball yes but only because of my head coach. I love how much E-Sports is coming into the world.

Agree 100%

I wasn't into gaming much in high school, but I probably would have participated in eSports. But only if it didn't interfere with football, basketball, or baseball. :lol2:

From the KHSAA yesterday:

During its May meeting, the Board held continued discussions about the future of esports after concerns were raised about the content of one of the Association's offerings (League of Legends). After a lengthy review, the Board approved a recommendation directing staff to distribute co-authored correspondence from the Kentucky Center for School Safety in Richmond and the Kentucky Department of Education to school administrators with appropriate warnings and preview videos, and require written authorization of the parents, principal and superintendents including any requisite Department of Education requirements for applicable use of the Kentucky K-12 Internet network for public schools before the school may compete in the League of Legends game.

“We have to work collaboratively with our Department of Education and the Center for School Safety on this issue. Our public schools are blessed to utilize a one of a kind, high speed network and there has to be responsibility in that usage. In addition, we have to ensure that our administrators are not given carte blanche approval to certain games which some view as overly violent at a time when our schools are mandated to make continual school safety improvements," stated Tackett. "Certainly an outside group placing a friendly or age level appropriate rating on these games cannot be the only requirement. Our administrators need to make sure they know what the students are participating in just as they would in inspecting a field or court for play. And we need to be sure parents are on board. This is simply our desire to be appropriate stewards of the offerings of the Association.”
